    Free USENET for all.

Just follow this guide and you'll enjoy free USENET access in no time, for free:

    1. Download 'Gateway6 Client' (this is for creating an IPv6 tunnel for use with the IPv6 USENET server), http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6GNT1AOI (or you can go to http://www.go6.net [registration is required to download])

    2. Download the latest version of SABnzbd+ @ www.sabnzbd.org

    3. Install the Gateway6 Client (You may need to run the installer with compatibility settings set to [Windows Vista SP2]

    4. When the Gateway6 Client is open, type in anon.freenet6.net in the 'Gateway6 Address' field and click connect

    5. Go to http://whatismyipv6.net to verify that you've been assigned an IPv6 address [your address should be in this format: xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx]

    6. Install SABnzbd+

    7. Follow the instructions... When it asks for the server address, put in news.ipv6.eweka.nl under Server, "119" under Port, "10" under connections and proceed with the installation.

    8. When you're done, click Config > Servers, and scroll down to 'Add Servers' and put in newszilla6.xs4all.nl under Server, "119" under Port, "10" under connections and save the changes.

    9. You should be all set. Now go to a website (e.g. http://binsearch.info) and download an NZB. When asked, select to open it with SABnzbd+ and it will download your stuff to your 'Documents' folder.

    10. Done!

I'm not up to date on the free servers but I know eweka doesn't have free service anymore. They were doing it for free to promote their Ipv6 service and have since discontinued it. You can still get it but you have to pay for it now.
Newszilla is still up as far as i know but file retention is only 18 days, / 3 connection limit / speed 150kb/s. There may be others?

I pay for mine right now 2 year retention, 20 connections, my d/l speed is over 1 MB/s. I guess you get what you pay for.

With USENET you don't have to worry about getting busted for filesharing.
Stuff that was uploaded 2 years ago is still available for download today, availability isn't determined by how many seeders there are or what their upload speed is.

How does that work? How is it any different than P2p?

I didn't know that. I got the information on another forum, so I thought I would pass it on.

You're paying $15? You can get the exact same service for $11.

It's nothing like P2P these are commercial servers, Usenet was around before the internet. The only reason someone would use P2P is they are to cheap to buy a Usenet subscription.

I used to use GigaNews, but it's a rip-off compared to AstraWeb. You can get the exact same retention (858 days and growing), exact number of connections (20 connections), SSL, etc. for $11/month [instead of paying $25/month]

You will not find a better deal than the offer I posted. Go ahead and try.

Remember to use klverig's promotion link when signing up, so you're locked in at the $11/month rate (instead of $15)

[If you're new to USENET, then try out the free 14-day trial that N0mad posted to see if its right for you, and if you like it... Cancel and go with AstraWeb (it's the exact same thing)]

I didn't intend that as a dis or anything (I was referencing the GigaNews video tutorial that I just posted, not your post). I know some people like GigaNews (or other providers), I was just stating my own personal opinion. GigaNews is a solid service, I just think it's too expensive. I didn't mean to offend.

USENET started out as a message board. We didn't have forums back in those days. If you wanted to have a discussion with people around the world you started your own newsgroup.

If tom wanted to talk about Nazis and UFOs he could start his own newsgroup alt.ufo.nazi.conspiracy and post messages and hope other people would post to that group and join in on the discussion. Joe could start his own group alt.fan.keith.olbermann and post messages.

If you found a group you liked you subscribed to it and then usually once a day you downloaded all the new message headers. This was back in the days of dialup so you didn't want to spend all day downloading message bodies of things you weren't interested in. You went through your group and marked the message headers that you wanted the message bodies for. If something interested you then you would respond to the message with your own message. It was an all text based system.

Then somewhere along the way someone got the bright idea of taking porn pics, warez programs, video games , mp3 files and chopping up the file into pieces and posting them as text messages. You couldn't post the whole file because your text messages couldn't be bigger than 60,000 characters. So what you did was take your file and chop it up into 60,000 character chunks and then uploaded all the chunks as text messages. Those groups were called binary groups because they consist of only binary files.

The USENET is still technically a text based message board. Anybody that has a subscription to one of the boards can read the messages. In practical terms my newsreader program takes the messages of binary files it wants to read and reassembles all the chunks of a binary file that I have decided I want to read. The end result being a copy of the original file.

Most of the text messages in these newsgroups are posted anonymously so I don't know who the original uploader is. I'm not sharing or trading any information with him so there's no file sharing involved, all I'm doing is reading text messages posted on the web.

I remember using BBS before I got AOL... You had to dial-in to a specific number to access it.

                              It looked something like this:
