Suspect in Custody After 3 Students Shot at California School

DEVELOPING: Authorities have one person in custody after a gunman shot three students Tuesday morning at a high school in Los Angeles, Fox News confirms.

Police said three people were shot Tuesday morning at Gardena High School, about 15 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

Gardena police Lt. Steve Prendergast said the alleged gunman -- a black male wearing black clothing -- is believed to be a student.

Prendergast said the three victims have been treated by paramedics and transported to a hospital. A Los Angeles fire official told KABC-TV that at least one victim is in critical condition.

Prendergast said a teacher called 911 at 10:41 a.m. local time and police from the city of Gardena initially responded. The school is actually located in the city of Los Angeles and the incident is being turned over to Los Angeles police.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles Unified School District reportedly told local news outlets that the shooting was accidental. The spokesman said the gun was inside a backpack and discharged when the bag was put on the floor -- injuring the victims with a single bullet.

Law enforcement officials, however, say they are skeptical of that account and say the shooting is currently under investigation.

Gardena High School, which is currently on lockdown, has close to 3,100 students.

Lol, since when is a shooting at a California school newsworthy? Especially gardena. We have so many school shootingshere I am surprised to see this even being mentioned.

The same thing they are claiming happened here (accidental discharge) also happened at my high school in Los Angeles. Some kid brought a gun to school in his backpack for some reason, and it accidentally discharged during class when the kid dropped his backpack or something along those lines.

I highly doubt 3 people got shot because of this though, I am pretty sure it was just someone shooting the place up.

      @Lincolnsnuff: WTF is going on?

Do you mean that as in, "what's up with all the school shootings lately?". The answer is nothing. CA schools are always getting shot up, constantly every year. Usually just gang stuff so never gets reported, but since that one dumbass shot that senator, we are probably just seeing them report on teenage whackos a lot more this month.

        Update: 2 students

        ~
2 wounded at LA school when gun in backpack fires

        (AP) – 2 hours ago

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles police official says the two students wounded in a shooting at a high school were hit by one bullet that was fired when a gun in a backpack apparently went off by accident.

Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon says a 15-year-old Gardena High student was shot in the head Tuesday and is hospitalized in critical condition.

The other victim is a 15-year-old who was hit in the neck. Gannon describes it as a "through-and-through" wound.

Gannon says the student who brought the gun said he was sorry after it went off, and a teacher in the classroom said it appeared to be an accident.

The student with the gun ran to another room and police took him into custody.

        Talk about shit-luck!!

@sgreger1 - Yes, mostly disbelief about the state of our nation that certain folks consider extreme violence as an acceptable solution to life's problems. It is this type of "take the extreme" mentality that has spilled over into other things like PACT, health care, Iraq/Afghanistan, etc. It's a sad commentary on where things are going in this country.

Long story short, it's always been this way, and society has actually changed very little in the last 300 years here in America. As far as using violence to get what one wants, or to kill people who you are pissed at, well that is kind of how it's always been, it's just that it's equally as shocking each time it happens. We will probably see a lot more of this. As more and more people are unemployed for multiple years, we are going to see an increase in crazies doign crazy shit. Most crazies find themselves gainfully employed which distract them from being crazy, the guy usually waits until he is fired to shoot up his office. But nowadays, too many idle hands is going to lead to a lot more shootings like the unfortunate one we just saw in AZ.

As far as school shootings, I really cannot fathom what would cause a young person to risk going to jail for life over. There are no problems at that age which are relevant or matter enough to warrant murder as a viable remedy to whatever crappy situation you have found yourself in. We all do crazy stupid (and often times dangerous) things as kids, but to wake up one morning and load your backpack with a gun with the intention of killing another human being, well.. that's just the definition of crazy.

So why are western movies "nostalgic" showing gun fighting duels, but every time people get shot up we scream like guns are brand new weapons that should be banned. I say we arm everyone... then it will be fair.

                Guns for All Americans!

I'll take a Glock and an order of nachos please.

Yeah I think that would normally be local news, it might be actually. Yes people get shot in dangerous neighborhoods, drugs are smuggled into prison, and one that's never reported people kill/assault their spouses or significant other every day however it's less common than you think and do you want to hear about it everyday.

Yah that's what I was thinking. Whether it discharged accidentaly or not, the kid brought a gun to school and someone ended up getting shot in the head. Dude's life is over.

Look, not even 24 hours has passed and already in my inbox is another school shooting here.

At El Camino Real High School, some kid shot a LAUSD officer and fled the scene. El Camino real is the BEST high school in the entire San Fernando Valley/Norther LA area, I tried to get in there for years but only the rich kids or those in the district were able to get in, and even here we see shootings.

"We want to make you aware of an incident in Woodland Hills. El Camino Real High School, near Platt Ave & Burbank Blvd, is locked down after an LAUSD officer was shot there. A search for the suspect is under way in the Woodland Hills area.

Please use extreme caution in and around the Woodland Hills area. Updates to follow as available."

Although the world has not changed that much I am starting to believe that people have become a couple notches crazier.

Breakdown of traditional families, kids essentially having kids, mental overload of prescription drugs leading to greater mental problems in the name of profit, junk culture hitting kids from all angles, gangster culture which comes from junk culture, pressure to fit it, pressure to achieve and schools essentailly being run like prisons which in turn brings out the crazy in already rebellious youth.

Fox News was reporting that the shooter today was not a student, rather a 40 year old male. The shooting just happened to occur near both a high school and a middle school.

Seriously? Point out where this is new in the last 1000 years or so? It seems when you really delve into history books this is business as usual for humankind.

I always wonder why the old always look at the young and say how much better it was 50 years ago, but when you look 100 years ago, those people where bitching about their youth and saying it was better even before that. This chain could probably be tracked back to when Earth was perfect.... like before humans maybe?
