Sometimes the neocons and their self-righteous wannabes are right. For instance, over at WorldNetDaily, where no shortage of neocons romp, Michelle Malkin points out a recent Absolut vodka ad that redraws the western United States along the lines approved by La Raza and MEChA.

It’s called Aztlán, the Chicanismo community “repatriated” and the Swedish vodka company is not beyond exploiting it to sell their wares to Mexicans and Mexican-Americans who dream of sending “pilgrims,” i.e., white people, scrambling over the Mississippi, although many of La Raza (the Race) racists would have all white people go back to Europe.

No big surprise Absolut would shamelessly exploit the desire of Mexicans to grab more than a third of the United States. On the other hand, it is a perfect example of how many Mexicans believe the Southwest belongs to them and the gringos should go packing, lest they fall victim to the Plan of San Diego.

yeah, just recently though. i don't know when this ad was made. and it doesn't really matter whether its swedish or some other country, as that has little bearing. the point is absolut is a very popular vodka....and this is just very low-brow advertising. who the hell do they think they are? that since their ads are supposed to be hip and creative, that they're allowed to have this crap without anybody noticing?

I always wonder how the Native Americans feel about the Mexican people retaking "Their land."

My first reaction to the ad was that it was pretty smart to do, but I have a feeling that most Mexicans will easily react with skepticism to such obvious emotional manipulation.

um..FWIW,all Absolut did was take an old map of Mexico from 1850. That is what Mexico used to look like before the Mexican-American war. I read the latest comments from Absolut, and they were simply trying to appeal to some idea of Nostalgia for Mexicans. (Where the ad was targeting)

I really don't understand why folks think it is such a big issue. Companies here occasionally advertise with images that hearken back to a better day. except, it was usually only "better" for a certain group of people. Just as there are folks who still relive the battles of the civil war here, I do imagine that there are folks living in Mexico who do dream about what it would be like if Mexico never lost California, Texas, and the rest of it. What do I care if a company tries to take advantage of that feeling. I just don't see it as some sort of attack on us.

And, for all of my friends reading this that don't live in the US, I apologize for saying us. I'm just too tired to try and say it more artfully.

I understand the grief of the native americans, the mexicans, etc.
I'm not saying what the white men did back in the old days was good.
But the thing is this, the US border has been the way it is for a while and there is a community of Mexicans who want to win back the southwest based on RACE and don't care if it involves violence.
Why people care about taking back land that was never theirs in their own lifetime and want to fight the people of a race that are descendants of who took it from their ancestors is just ****ing stupid and Absolut is pandering to this ridiculous philosophy.
Maybe if they organized a way to fix their own impoverished situation they could care less about our ownership of the southwest. There are Mexican Americans who feel the same, this isn't merely white-man-jingoistic-xenophobic sentiment.
Also my brother is married to a Mexican woman and he was much more mad about it than I was after I sent him an email about this.

well i dunno who alleged Absolut was in conspiracy with anyone.

this wouldn't be as much of a problem in any other country that doesn't have a heated group of constituents who would like to redact the border and on the other side trying to keep it secure. i don't mean to be a smartass but we have the problem of illegal immigration that is one of the top issues today.
i also don't know what nostalgia they're or you're referring to, seeing as nobody alive today ever lived in mexico when that was the border.

just imagine if Israel picked up an ad by absolut 'in an absolut world' where Israel is nonexistant and still owned by Palestine. it's ok here but is it not over there? the situation is no different except for vastly different levels of violence, so far.
how about a map showing the US owning the whole continent of North America? not something i'd vouch for.

kind of hard to misunderstand things here. time to find a new ad campaign if this is how far they'll scrape the barrel. it's just plain crass to have ANY ads depicting different borders. apparently one's flying off the handle or racist for noticing it and saying something, since we keep being conditioned to not care and let it all slide because of what our ancestors did to their ancestors.

If the ad only ran in Mexico...then why isn't the ad worded 'En un mundo Absolut' instead of in English?
