In my opinion, "The Wire" and "The Shield" are the two greatest crime drama series ever. "The Wire" is like a great novel. "The Shield" is like an 88-hour movie.

Other honorable mentions worth the viewing have been mentioned: "Sons of Anarchy," "Deadwood" (though it ends abruptly), "OZ."

I'm currently doing "The Sopranos" from front to back. But I CAN'T say enough about my first two suggestions. My two favorite series of all time, and I still can't pick a favorite.

EDIT: I can't stress enough, especially with "The Shield," but any of these, start from the beginning, and resist the urge to skip ahead or look at IMDb message boards. TS is an incredibly satisfying watch, and the best finale of a drama.

For comedies: the first few seasons of Trailer Park Boys are great, Arrested Development is good, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Reno 911, The Office, The Ali G show
+1 on Oz.. Was a great series.
Ali G hilarious.. The original borat skits were my favorites.

The walking dead has been a great series so far, only a few episodes though.

I just started and finished the Sarah Connor Chronicles this week. Only 2 seasons, but it was really good. I liked the way it blended the domestic with the sci-fi.

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

We canceled cable a couple of years ago and I just grab torrents now if I want to see a TV show. I usually don't bother to check something out for a season or two anyhow, since I'd rather let other people watch the 99% of crap that is on and then let me know what's worth taking a look at. Plus I hate to wait until next week or next season to see what is going to happen if I get hooked on a show!

Breaking Bad, The Wire, Mad Men, and Carnivale are all worth the time. The original British version of the Prisoner is great, but I didn't care much for the new version that AMC did a couple of years ago.

I like a lot of what's been mentioned, especially Dexter and Breaking Bad. If you have Netflix, try The IT Crowd. It's freakin' hilarious!

I'm sort of surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet. I would recommend Burn Notice. I'm not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for but I got hooked and I don't typically watch shows of that sort.

the new show on FX "lights Out" Is pretty good and only 3 episodes in. I know you said no cop shows but "southland" on TNT is phenomenal......

Amazon sells the Psych iphone cover that Shawn has, lol. They also have a Burton Guster T-shirt that I want, it's his face made up of all of the names Shawn has given him.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Royal Pains. He's a doctor but it's not set in a hospital. He's a conseirge (sp?) doctor to rich folks in the Hamptons. Good comedy.

I love Psych, I've been watching it on netflix streaming. I've also watched the first two seasons of the Tudors (my girlfriend got me watching this one) which I must say was boring at first and a little ridiculous, but it has grown on me.

Trailer Park Boys is one of the best comedy series I have ever had the pleasure of watching. I agree with many of these recommendations, but, if I had to pick one to back, it's tpb. Reveen and Swayze in the Canadian hood making love and goin to jail...again and again.
