    Sony is breaking the law

I read this article in VG http://www.vg.no/spill/artikkel.php?artid=10037863 (norwegian), and saw that Sony is breaking Norwegian law.

When PS3 came out, you had the opportunity to install Linux on it. Last year, Sony released an upgrade that took away that opportunity. They did say that if you wanted to use Linux you could choose not to install the upgrade, but without the upgrade, you can't access the PlayStation Network and play new games.

Many Norwegian PS3 owners said that the possibility of installing Linux was their reason for buying PS3 instad of Xbox 360. When they take away that option, they change the product agreement after the product is sold - which in Norway is illegal.

The government, through "forbrukerrådet", has been in contact with Sony and the official Norwegian importer and distributor, Nordisk Film Interactive, but they are both refering to their lawyers and decline that their breaking the law.

What do you think will be the reactions after this? Has anything like this occured in your country?

I definately wouldn't want to piss off nerd who are down to install Linux on their playstations lol.

Yah we have that problem in our country, and microsoft and sony are the worst. They will sell you something, then decide they want a better handle on it so they will shut down or ammend features AFTER youve bought it. This does not entitle you to a refund. Sucks.

The hackers retaliated. The guy who broke the iphone, hacked the PS3 and put the root key online (also asking Sony for a job in the process) Sony is suing him for it, but alas the damage is done and now you can mod your PS3!

I don't have Linux on my PS3. I've seen a review on it, and it seemed to be working quite badly. And I don't wanna jailbreak it either. I woun't have my warranty anymore if I do that

I won't do it to mine either, mainly because I have a modded xbox (original) and play every atari/nes/snes/genesis/N64 game on it. I'm not for piracy completely, but I will download old games that aren't made anymore, or music that I already own on CD and/or LP.

The only thing about the PS3 is that they took away backward compatibility from the earlier models so they could sell the old games on their PS Store for you to download. That pissed me off.

Me too. I ended up with a newer one that wasn't b.c. Hell, I think there are more PS2 games that I would rather play then PS3 games.

They've broken the Norwegian law... I hope Forbrukerrådet stops after a while. iTunes Store was blocked in Norway for a while, because Apple refused to remove the limit that made it impossible to play the songs on non-Apple players. To me it's not a problem, but it's the principe. The big companies can do whatever they want, and when there is a government that actually cares about the inhabitants of their country, they block all the services. It pisses me off. Norway isn't a huge market, so they can do whatever they want and still woun't lose much money. If Obama tried the same thing, I think Sony and Apple would give in after a while.
