that was funny as hell tho. sounds like something I would do to piss off people.

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Buy a boating air horn. As soon as he starts with that...blow the air horn into the reciever.

They are required by law to show that you still owe the money and they have the legal right to collect that debt. It's called debt validation.

I heard about this on Clark Howard. They're just trying to scare you. GoVegan is right. Unless they have some kind of proof, which they probably do not, tell them to f*ck off.

Yes, you have the right at least to see if the debt is valid, your account history and how much you owe. Also, I have read some columns about debt collectors who call you, offer to settle your debt for a fraction of the original amount owed and then sell the remaining balance to another debt collector years later. Get everything in writing. You also sound like you were harassed. At a minimum, I would write down the name of who you talked to, the date and time and a brief summary of your conversation. This is just for your own records but it might come in handy later.

Chad man, don't let people call you on your phone, in your own house, and talk to you like that. He's using insulting language and intimidation tactics to earn a few more dollars in pay-off bonuses, and as such, he is a worthless piece of shit with a joke of a career. Feel free to tell him that, and then hang up on him. Or tell him to "hang on... just 30 more seconds... I've just about traced your location and I swear to God I'll be there a week from today at this exact hour to cut your ****ing throat and piss on you while you bleed out like a pig". Then hang up. See how that works.

I've been reading horror stories here and complaints against the company. Apparently they try to scare people into paying over the phone. I've never had a debt collector that was rude with me or refused to mail me information about a debt.
I've run into a similar situation with an ex's debt. Report the company to the Arkansas Attorney General, and they will take it from there. You'll have to write that company a letter, but they WILL stop or risk getting shut down. And that small debt your ex owed them won't seem worth it anymore. They are looking for the "easy" mark Chad...don't pay them a ****ing dime, call the State Attorney General. Most states have an entire department that deals with shit like this. Good luck

You don't have to do anything unless you receive a written notice. In fact you can sue them for harassment for $1000 each time they call. You have to do a few things first before that can happen. Browse around this website to get some information.

Great info and thanks for sharing RobsanX. I just got an odd call from a company saying I owed then $10k for an old car loan they said was still outstanding. Funny thing is that it was paid off when I purchased my wife's new car in 2005.

I asked if they had proof that I owed the debt and they waffled a bit and said they would get back to me. Interesting thing is that even if I did owe it (I don't) the statue of limitations has past anyways!

Debt collectors are scum. I actually had a job as a debt collector and I lasted a day and a half, I just can't do that type of scum job. And ALL they want, is you to pay, and if you can't, or don't want to, do not waste your time trying to talk to them, it's a waste. I finally did pay off my debts, but when I was getting calls, as soon as I realized who it was, I'd say, "one moment please", and lay the phone down, and just leave it while I went about my business. I did this everytime they called.

F*^K em. You werent talking to a lawyer or anyone of any importance whatsoever. The person on the phone is a commission telemarketer in a business that is barely regulated working for a company that obviously tells them to do whatever they have to in order to get money. They are uneducated and assume you are to. I used to work for Honda and their debt collection team is based in Newark DE. They would come and try to get cars and they had the worst credit of any of the people that walked through the doors. If they could take 1000 out of your tax return they would just do it. There would be no reason to call you and ask you to pay. Why would they create extra work? They certainly don't have your best interest in mind. Don't give them a Damn thing.
