    Weird phone call this morning....

I've never had to deal with a debt collector before. About 7-8 years ago I had some debt (ex wife had a lot of credit cards), and the companies had charged the debt and was no longer collecting, so I just finished the "7 year waiting period" for my credit to be refreshed.

I get a call this morning from some debt collector at a company named CRA which apparently buys old debt from old debt collectors. This guy was very rude and threatening, it was really weird. He was giving me my personal information like my social, and he knew I had just filed a tax return, etc etc.

He was threatening to take 1,000$ off my tax return and when I told him he couldn't do that, he was like "oh yeah? well that's what's going to happen if you don't give me your credit card number right now" and issued a bunch of threats. Then when I told him I couldn't pay whatever they were asking, obviously, which is why it got charged off like 7 years ago, he said "you should have thought about that before you got in debt, you need to be a man and learn how to pay your bills"......It was really weird.

I know the FTC's Consumer Protection requires them to mail you a written notice of debt before they collect anything, so I called back and asked for that and some unschooled hourly employee was like "Yeeeh we already mailed you dat" and I told him they haven't, mail it again, he hung up on me.

So I don't know if this is a legit company (they have hundreds of complaints online and are apparently being looked into), I've heard they use scare tactics, so I don't know if this is something I should lose sleep over or if it's just some fear mongering debt company that legally can't do anything.

Anyone had to deal with anything like this?

in Romania there are what they call "debt collectors" some kind of firms like "legal loan sharks" .... it's exactly the same thing.... and they can harass you on the phone verbally and so on an so on ....

I'd just tell him to **** himself. Deal with it later if he gets a lawyer involved.

I'd also get a GoogleVoice number. That makes it easy to block calls, and it gives you 1 number you can use for anything.

I've been reading horror stories here and complaints against the company. Apparently they try to scare people into paying over the phone. I've never had a debt collector that was rude with me or refused to mail me information about a debt.

It's weird, he was like "You'll never be able to buy anything again" and I was like "I just bought a car, and I bought a house 2 years ago" and he paused and then said "Well you gonna pay! You wanna be a big man? Need to pay like a big man" It sounded like I was talking to Mr. T at times.

maybe they were pissed because they didn't earn 100K in that day ... loooooooool

I mean .... do you know that these ****ing debt collecting companies are owned by the biggest lawyers in the country here ?!?!

and they bought a lot of influence to become rich over night....

a debt of $100 can turn into $10.000 in nearly ten years ... it's unfair.

**** them and their wifes =))

When he calls with this nonsense you should immediately fall into character (mr T) and just start playing his own game. Be like, "Chad pitties the fool who comes to collect on his debt, SUCKA!"

Just do that until eventually this guy leaves you alone.

I've had a similar experience. One event didn't even have anything to do with me but the collector was after someone else but ended up with my phone number. Trying to explain to someone you are not who they think you are is an exercise in futility.

Explain to them that harrasing phone calls are considered obscene phone calls and you will respond with an air horn if they are rude or hateful again. This worked for me but probably disrupted my neighbors.

Be aware that just because the debt was charged off, it still can be reported on your credit whenever there is activity on the account i.e. one debt collector sells it to another. Trying to settle these is a long road and the people involved have bottom of the barrel IQ's. I got behind in late 2001 and it took several years to clean it all up. I've had the pleasure of dealing with several types of vermin and today am glad to have them out of my life.

                              Hope this helps.
