    Oregon anyone?

    hello all

I currently live in Georgia just south of Atlanta but I will soon be moving. More specifically to Portland, Oregon. My girlfriend graduated massage therapy school (lucky me) and wants to move their for better job availability because I guess there is a lot of people into all that new age crap. We plan on moving in July once I finish mechanical school. Does anyone live there, been there? What are the best parts of town to live in? Job market? Cool stuff to do? I've done some research and it looks pretty straight but somethings I can't seem to find on internet. Any info, stories, or advice would be much appreciated!

I did a snus store search and found several to my excitement. There are none where I live now. That alone is almost enough to sell me on it haha

I don't think I need to say where I'm from, but I've been to Portland several times.

It's a nice city, but there is no city better than Seattle.

Seattle also has it's share of new age hippies, amongst other 'space' scenes. Your girlfriend might like it more here.

Anyways, best of luck in your travels, future Portlander.

[If you two enjoy cannabis, then you will enjoy the Seattle Hempfest (20th Anniversary this year in August) in Myrtle Edwards Park - http://hempfest.org

Portland also hosts a hemp festival called 'Hempstalk'. That one starts on September 10th-11th at Kelley Point Park - http://www.hempstalk.org

I am a Washingtonian turned Oregonian. I have been living here for about 6 years now. The employment rate kinda sucks right now. Lots of hippies, yuppies, emos, bicyclists, tree huggers, tattooed/pierced individuals, etc.....well lets just say the population is very diverse, eclectic, and random here. Music scene is pretty damn good, whether you like rock, jazz, opera, symphony, or musical theater, and you can't really travel more than a mile without running into a strip club or two, seriously they are everywhere here. Lots of good coffee, beer, and food. Where you want to live will depend on the type of person you are, and what kind of environment you want to live in, but EVERYWHERE seems to be a suburb of Portland rather than really being a town on their own. Some great schools here as well. I'm raising my son here (just about to turn 1yo) and don't have any qualms about it. Portland is also pretty liberal, politically speaking. Oh, and the weather sucks a fat saggy pair of knee knockers.

I still have kind of an observers perspective, and say I'm from Washington, but live in Portland. Some other Oregonians might have some better/more quality advice.

Check out "Portlandia" on IFC or on demand if you have it, it will give a skewed look at what life is like here.

And did I mention how many strip clubs there are??? A LOT!! I even made a special trip once to check out Bridget the Midget when she headlining a club here.

I'm 50 miles South in the Capital Shitty of Salem.

Try checking out the Hawthorne area on the East side of PDX.

Whoever thought the little city of Portland, where I was born,
would turn into a new age mecca and TV show to boot.

Not sure. It used to be Satyricon. Sadly it closed.

            Try this:
            Hawthorne Theatre
            http://www.hawthornetheatre.com/

SE Hawthorne is the hippie area. Check out the Third Eye. Jack Herer (RIP), author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes started the shop.

If you watched Portlandia, the TV series, you would know that Portland
is where the young retire and wake up at 11:00 AM.

Portland is rad. It is my second home after Seattle, as I grew up there off and on during childhood. Portland has by far the friendliest population of any major metro area. Anyone and everyone is approachable and willing to help if you are looking for something or have a question. As to what part of town to live in, North Portland near Alberta and Mississippi streets is "blowing up" in popularity. Or, you could just call it gentrification. St. John's is a nice little neighborhood in North Portland, but there are still plenty of shady characters, gang activity, and drug addicts. It does have its charms though, especially the bridge. Speaking of drug addicts, Portland is literally the Mecca for disgruntled, homeless drug-addicts due to their high level of acceptance and free health care programs/needle exchanges. You will see these people everywhere downtown. If you hate junkies and panhandlers, you're headed to the wrong place lol. Portland is small, so it won't take you long to explore the neighborhoods and find out what's for you. If you like Pabst, cheap drinks, rain, and strippers, you're going to love it. If you have a more advanced taste in beer, you are especially going to love it. PDX is the microbrew capital of the USA, with more prewpubs (and strip clubs) per capita than anywhere else. That alone makes it rule. Have fun and welcome to the Pacific Northwest!

Washington or Oregon... The Pacific Northwest is where it's at.

I think you two are going to like it here... Welcome!
