Costs Of Smoking In China Have Risen More Than 300 Per Cent In Under A Decade

I'm wondering if these guys from http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/ are aware of other parts of the world and the increase in tobacco products costs

    http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/217086.php

In 2003, a pack of cigarettes in Romania was roughly $0.30 (marlboro, lucky strike and so on) now the price for a pack goes up to $5 which basically means there's been an increase of over 1500% :-)

I'm wondering how the prices went up in the U.S since the late 90's till today.....

For me from about 3$ to 10$ for non budget smokes. But I was able
To goto the reservation and get the same cigarettes now for about 4$. It's the taxes that go up not the actual price of the smokes I think

It's always the taxes, not sure exactly what percentage of the whole price represent the taxes but I guess it's roughly 50%....

      So do you still smoke?!

I can give a few price points(per pack) through the years...

        1980 75¢
        1986 $1
        1992 $1.50
        2011 $5.90

I'll give you a different way to look at it...

In 1970 cigarettes were 35 cents a pack and minimum wage was $1.15/hour

That I can understand...... and the rate per hour now is probably roughly $8 or higher ....

In Romania the minim wage has tripled since 2003 ... but the cigarettes costs has risen 1500% ... just a though..... it's huge...

When I was in overseas in the Army, many years ago, you could get a carton of cigarettes for $1.70 in the PX.

So you had to work about 20 minutes for a pack of cigarettes. Now you have to work about 45 minutes for a pack :^/

In China there are 350 million smokers
                      lol that's x 15 the population of Romania =))

and nearly as much as the population of U.S.

A 1638 Imperial edict in China declared that the possession, use or selling of tobacco was a capital offense punishable by decapitation.
that's what they should do today as well =))

Remember, the population of China is roughly one billion. 350 million smokers is actually quite low per capita:

                            350 million / 1 billion = 35% rate

In Austria, the smoking rate is approximately 60% -- nearly double the rate of China.

Yeah Austria is crazy, when I went there to snowboard there were 12 year-olds smoking.

I've just recently checked the German snus forums, and it seems that the Austrians have now started snusing, and even have their own northerner clone site.
