Recommended Breeds For 1st Time Dog Owners

Would anyone know which breeds of dogs are most suited to possible 1st time dog owners?

My brother's looking for a dog at the moment but we were a bit confused when we visited the animal shelter this afternoon that a lot of the dogs' write-ups said 'not suitable for 1st time dog owners'

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You can't go wrong with a Standard Schnauzer. Aside from grooming costs of course.

I recommend a cat. I don't like dogs much at all, but I've been most impressed with greyhounds. They're mellow, and interesting looking, but not good for an apartment I don't think.

Thanks, just Googled one, yes I can see you would need to take good care of their coats.

I've been most impressed with greyhounds. They're mellow, and interesting looking, but not good for an apartment I don't think.

Golden Retrievers are good but they have a tendency to chew as puppies. I have a German Shepherd and I would not reccommend them for a first time dog owner they are a lot of work but well worth it. Labs are hard headed and honestly a you can't go wrong with a good Mut.

They're generally hardier, and bad traits may be muted by the mixing. Conversely, bad traits may pop up later, because the breed wasn't obvious at first. In general, I'm a fan of giving homes to unwanted animals. Go to the pound and pick the ugliest dog there. It'll probably be your best friend forever :^)

Thanks. Golden Retreivers and Labs have been discussed but I think they might be a little to large a dog for my brother's house. Thing is though I'm getting the impression smaller dogs are not suited to 1st time dog owners as they may have behavourial issues only seasoned dog owners could deal with?

We did see a smaller mut this afternoon that we liked but unfortunately she was labelled 'not suitable for 1st time dog owners' Not sure exactly what it is she would do, I mean she seemed ok to us.
