    Military folk?

I was talking to Xobe recently on FB and it made me wonder who all here has served in the military. I see it pop up from time to time, so just wanted to see.

What branch/years served/what was your job?

I was in the Navy in the 80's, welded on submarines. It was mostly a big party time.

A lot of people haven't answered this thread yet - there are a surprising number of snusers here who are ex military.

12 years British Army, Infantry and Combat Medic.

82nd airborne, 1-505 parachute infantry regiment, Charlie Co/ 13f- Forward Observer (Fire Support Specialist).

Hey Xobe, your a 68W? Do you know what unit they are sending you to for your permanent duty station yet? When I was in I worked very closely with the 68W's, being a combat medic is a great (and rewarding) job, but can also be difficult. If you have any questions im pretty fresh out (got out in 09), I know I wish I had people to ask questions when I first got out of AIT, it was a pretty scrambled experience to say the least. 68W is a cool ass job (with LOTS of perks you probably don't even know about yet, like using IV's when your hung over to cure yourself in time for PT), but dragging those ****ing bodies is heavy as shit, plus you gotta carry the med-pouch (or backpack) with you everywhere you go lol. Good luck man, you chose a good job, everyone likes the medic!.

Are you going to elect for any of the schools like airborne or air-assault? Are you going to try out for ranger school or SF? You should try to petition to go to as many schools as possible man, that's how you get the good promotions, gotta have all that ice on your chest.

Yeah man. I am loving it so far. I do not know if I am going to be with a line unit or on the FOB at the aid station (or a mixture of the two). It can really go either way. I've been assigned to the 10th Mountain division. I report to Ft. Drum in a week.

10th mountain? That's a damn respectable outfit down there, I had a lot of my class in AIT go to 10th mountain and (3rd ID?) down in Ft. Stewart. You'll get to hang with some SF dudes too down there in 10th mountain which will be cool.

Where I was stationed they pretty much only had a few slots for actual line medics, so the good medics got assigned to an infantry platoon and the "decent" medics got assigned to the aid station. While deployed you will get a chance at action regardless of what your "official" position is within the unit anyways so it doesn't matter. People switch out, and everyone gets trained in everyone else's job, so you will get a chance to be all hooah and shit whether you like it or not lol.

Strive for that position on the line though, line medics get all the glory (and promotions).
