I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all very much for your support thus far in my work on the review of the Tobacco Products Directive and the current discrimination of Swedish snus on the internal market.
Over 5300 people, aged between 18 and 87, living in all of EU’s 27 member states signed my petition supporting a fair treatment of snus in the upcoming review of the Directive. The result of my petition shows that this is truly a question which engages citizens from all over the EU, and not only the Swedes, as the Commission often wants to make us believe. The overall interest in the review of the Tobacco Products Directive is also clear considering the fact that the Commission public consultation collected more than 80,000 answers.
I have now handed over your signatures to Commissioner Dalli, requesting his assurance that snus will be given a fair trial and be assessed on its own merits. We need a Directive that regulates all oral tobacco products in a consistent manner, putting focus on consumer choice and protection and making sure all oral tobacco products meet the same set of standards.
The current Commission public consultation is only the beginning of a long process that will result in a new, and hopefully better, Tobacco Products Directive. I hope that you will continue to give me your support in my fight for a fair treatment of snus!
