California Wants To Buy Names Of Web Shoppers

The staff of the California State Board of Equalization has proposed paying private contractors for the skinny on state residents who have made purchases exceeding $5,000 on the Internet without paying the state and local sales tax they owe.

Watch your asses all. This is only the first shot, and if it passes the inevitable court challenge, you can bet other states will follow suit.

I can and can't see this passing...yet with our government I don't put anything past them anymore. I thought we were all about free enterprise, how does this stimulate the economy? I can see how they would profit from the tax revenue but at the same time I see small business going under because of stuff like this. Is this $5,000 YTD in purchases or $5,000 a pop? Because if you got $5,000 to drop on a single internet purchase...well you should be paying up IHMO. I can see the privacy rights card getting played.

Come on Cali, just legalize the herb and tax, then PROFIT! No need for silly things like this.

california sets a terrible example for the rest of the usa. asswipes....always trying to start trouble
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.
