    Warnings

    * Deleting your browser's cache is NOT the same as deleting cookies. See this link for deleting cookies.

    Tips

    * You can also use a third-party software like CCleaner, which can clear multiple caches at once.
    * If you wish, you can disable the cache entirely in your browser's options panel by choosing the 'do not remember history' option or simply browse incognito. The cache is used to speed up access to websites by loading data from the local memory rather than downloading it, however you probably will not notice a difference from a high-speed internet connection.
    * You may also want to clear your browser's cookies.
    * You can use Portable Firefox from a USB flash drive, which will store the data (cache, cookies, etc.) on the portable device, rather than your computer's hard drive.

Anonymity when browsing the Web can be important for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you are concerned that your sensitive data may be left behind in temporary files such as cookies, or maybe you just do not want anyone to know where you have been.
No matter what your motive for privacy might be, IE9's InPrivate Browsing may be exactly what you are looking for. While utilizing InPrivate Browsing, cookies and other files are not saved on your hard drive. Even better, your entire browsing and search history is automatically wiped out. InPrivate Browsing can be activated in just a few easy steps.

this is funny, all those files can be EASILY retrieved if just simply deleted. you can use tools like eraser in windows and shred type tools in unix type systems to overwrite empty drive space. overwriting with one pass isn't good enough, 3 passes is good enough unless you are Osama bin Laden or someone else the feds are REALLY willing to put resources into capturing. 7 is awesome, 35 is overkill. i recommend using firefox and making a firefox profile inside a hidden truecrypt container, i keep my tinfoil hat inside one.

“ In the time since this paper was published, some people have treated the 35-pass overwrite technique described in it more as a kind of voodoo incantation to banish evil spirits than the result of a technical analysis of drive encoding techniques. As a result, they advocate applying the voodoo to PRML and EPRML drives even though it will have no more effect than a simple scrubbing with random data. In fact performing the full 35-pass overwrite is pointless for any drive since it targets a blend of scenarios involving all types of (normally-used) encoding technology, which covers everything back to 30+-year-old MFM methods (if you don't understand that statement, re-read the paper). If you're using a drive which uses encoding technology X, you only need to perform the passes specific to X, and you never need to perform all 35 passes. For any modern PRML/EPRML drive, a few passes of random scrubbing is the best you can do. As the paper says, "A good scrubbing with random data will do about as well as can be expected". This was true in 1996, and is still true now. ”

If it's good enough for him it's good enough for me. 35 passes would take hours anyways on a whole drive. I remember the feds CLAIMED they could restructure 3 passes of pseudorandom data. Never heard of them actually doing it.

such a lot of work when you can just turn on private browsing in most browsers and it does not cache your history. and anyhow there are tools that can encrypt your entire user account on your computer so if the HDD was pulled no data could be accessed anyway.
