Hello Everyone,

I am a new user here and still have not had the chance to try snus. I ordered my first tin a couple of days ago. I recently have been trying to quit smoking but have found myself on Skoal and Grizzly. It's gross but it has been filling in for the cigs, nicotine-wise. Anyway, there is no way I can continue with this crap and I wonder if I should just quit the dip until I get my first tin of snus in a couple of days....how long do you think the a tin lasts the average user? I rolled American Spirit and went through like 10-15 rolled smokes per day. I have been taking like a half dozen dips or so since I quit the cigs...but I really don't like the stuff. However, I am happy that I haven't smoked...

Anyway, just wanted to say hi and let you all know I have really enjoyed reading the posts on this forum and look forward to reading and writing more here....

Well I was a 20-30 cigarette/day smoker and I go through 6-8 portions of snus a day (been snussing for a month now). This means a tin lasts me between 3-4 days. I just started using loose a week ago so I've been going through fewer portions lately though, makes it harder to judge. I'd say if your dipping about 6 then you'll probably snus just as often.

I went from 10 to 15 smokes a day to chewing, then to snusing. I did not think chewing was that gross. The wife thought it was a little disturbing though. There was a nice hit of nicotine from the chew compared to smoking. When I first started using snus I purchased some loose stuff. I spit when I used the loose and spit for the first 10 minutes or so using portions. I don't spit at all now that I know I wont get sick swallowing any little bits or juice. I am not sure why you found chewing disgusting and thought that snus would be better. No spitting maybe?

What did you order or purchase to try out?

To answer your question about how long a tin lasts: Since I do not get to use tobacco at work, a tin last me between 6 and 8 days. So I use three to four portions per day with maybe a los prilla after eating my dinner. I think a lot of users on this site tend to use a lot more than me, but if I can be so bold and say your nicotine consumption may be more in line with mine, you should do quite well with 4 portions/pris per day. Most last more than an hour so you should have a lot of flavor enjoyment. Now for the hard part, what are you expecting and what sort of flavors do you like? Maybe disgusting isn't the right word, just after all I have read about where American chew comes from and what is in it, I found it to be nasty. No to mention swallowing it inadvertently, whereas with snus, from what I understand, you can swallow and not have to spit. I look forward to be able to enjoy it wherever without having to spit it, especially while indoors, not having to use a bottle etc.

It just appears, from what I have read anyway, that snus is much healthier than USA snuff.

As for what I ordered....I wasn't sure what I would like so I got a few different varieties to test out and see: Ettan loose, General loose, Knox portion, Lucky Strike portion, Skruf portion, Skruf strong loose, and Nick & Johnny portion. One tin of each of those. I wasn't sure exactly what I would like so I tried to spread it out. Hopefully I'll find one or two or five that I like quickly!

Anyway...thanks for the reply..oh and good to see a fellow Michigander on this board. Do you know of any retailers in this state. I ordered from buysnus.com after calling like a half dozen cigar/smoke shops and have them basically bewildered when I asked if they carried this product.

I live in BFE so I have not even bothered trying to call around to see if anyone carries snus. It seems like I am the only excessively educated person in this town. It also seems that in order to fit in, you either have to wear some form of camouflage or a NASCAR t-shirt. To each their own, I am the odd man out in this area. This is probably not a problem where you live. Unless my Google has failed me, you live in the suburbs of Detroit. Nice to see another Michigander in the forum. It seems there are quite a few active members here.

Great selection on your first purchase. Seems you put some time in to selecting some of the best, or you just happened to pick a lot of the snus I like along with many others. You will not regret ordering Ettan and Skruff (Knox Portion is my main snus after my taste has adjusted). Some others you may like to try if you like a little less traditional tobacco flavor: 1) Got Yellow-heard yellow loose is best, but have tried portion and am quite impressed 2) LD red portion-long lasting citrus flavor 3) Rape No 2- it has so many flavors, though I only use it once every couple of days 4) The love/hate Probe Whiskey Loose-I have it every night after dinner unless I choose to have Ettan Loose. Great stuff. Enjoy it all!

A quick question for you Slydel since you are from MI (or anyone else from MI)...In the recent past I have read about Michigan smokers getting spanked with ridiculous tax bills from the state for failing to pay taxes on cigs that they had ordered from websites like reservations and out of state online sellers...do you know if this applies to snus ordered from Sweden?

Would they not have to subpoena the website where you are buying the snus? Would they have any jurisdiction to obtain information about your purchases from Sweden? I wonder, is Michigan going to be big brother and watch all of your purchases to make sure you pay state tax, like from Buy.com or Newegg? I don't think they would have enough man power to do something like that. They might have the law, but not the resources. The only concern I would have is the amount of snus you buy at one time. I think any item over $200 you must pay a duty. Any item over $100 purchased as a gift you must pay a duty. I need to clarify that these are foreign purchases. It may seem silly but I have been keeping my purchase below $100 to avoid any hassle, along with using standard post. Unless customs is keeping a log of everything you purchase because of the Patriot Act (loss of personal freedom act), you should be just fine and dandy.

By the way, how did they start nailing people for not paying a cigarette tax? I think it is unlawful. Michigan is just trying to screw everyone as hard as they can. During the pre-internet day, you could purchase goods from a catalogue from an out-of-state company and not pay any tax on it. BECAUSE....... IT WAS NOT SOLD IN MICHIGAN!

I just looked up some info about MI going after cigarette purchasers. Seems they went after people purchasing more than $50 worth of cigs. An arbitrary number that marks a black market dealer versus someone that is consuming them. (authenticity was not verified)
