Ueli Steck - mad as a box of frogs OR genius?

I've been to the Eiger and it's an ominous mountain. I can't imagine anybody sane wanting to climb it. People fall to their deaths all the time, but this guy Euli Steck speed climbs it without ropes.

Americans tend to use the word awesome a bit too frequently but this fully warrants the use. It's totally awesome.

I just thought I'd share this with you.

He grew up on the Swiss alps and started climbing the Eiger at 18. He's got a good knowledge of all the pitfalls but unfortunately circumstances will always conspire to bite you in the ass.

Incredible! Anyone get National Geographic? The new issue is about free-soloing Half Dome in Yosemite and setting speed records. 8,000 vertical feet on solid rock in less than 3 hours with no ropes and very technical climbing... these people are barking mad, but inspiring too.

I was expecting to see him run or ski down, that's just suicidal though it's like the guys who tried to raft the river near everest and then died after the first 200 ft fall.

There is NO WAY you could pay me to do that job.
Right, you're going to climb 1600 odd feet up a tower with a 30lb swinging bag underneath you - you get a safety clip but you don't use it - if you do use it the clips they're so big it'll slip off the side of the rungs if you fall.
Bugger that.

I'd prefer to base jump off that than climb back down again.
