Yerba Mate is just another caffiene source. The bulk green variety and the toasted in bulk or tea bags are available at Brazilian groceries for a lot less than you'll pay for a US brand of Mate marketed as some sort of healthy alternative to coffee.
I have tried Yerba Mate a few times. No matter if I brew it strong or weak the green stuff tastes like tea made from bitter lawn clippings with a hint of diesel oil. The brown is a little bit easier, it tastes toasty and bitter. I think that Yerba Mate is an acquired taste, like black coffee. If I had no other source of caffiene I suppose I could grow to enjoy it in time.
