The refresh rate , 60hz-240Hz for LED/LCD, or much more (600Hz +) for plasma stands to reason that it will refresh its picture 60-240 or 600+ times a second. If you are a big sports fan/watcher or will be playing video games on this tv then the higher the Hertz, the "smoother" the motion viewing will be. With all that said my 52" Sony 120Hz LCD works just fine for me with great sharp pictures while watching HD programming or playing video games.

I was like you before we bought our last one, but when I started looking at the actual hardware, I went with Vizio. I have been extremely happy with it. After seeing our TV, we have had friends and family that gave their kids the name brands they bought and replaced their bedroom and living room TVs with Vizios. I will be buying another soon. I messing around and broke the glass in the lower right corner. There is a small blob of white there and multi-color lines going vetrically up the right 3" of my screen. It's annoying to watch. I have poked around at some research and it looks like I'll be going Vizio again.

I have a Panasonic, and am very happy with it. Sorry, can't tell you the model number, but it's a Full HD one (not HD ready) and my freesat HD channels look sweet.

Whatever you get I would make sure it also has lots of internet viewing options, apps for content from netflix, hulu, etc. This getting more common these days. Also you could consider offerings that support Google TV. I think Samsung has an app store to support its newer TV's.

                  Just my $0.02.

                    42 inch or larger
                    1080

I currently have a 37 Toshiba Regza 720 which has treated me well. Broadcasters are still pumping out 720,1080i so the 1080 will not make a difference I believe for ota, cable but definately for blu-rays/games.

Definitely 1080p, even if you don't happen to be sitting at the required distance, might as well have it if you ever need it. Look for one with a nice menu system. And plenty of HDMI outputs, so you can plug in your game systems and other stuff, and most importantly to hook it up to your PC for some "legally obtained" content viewing.

Don't forget that at the stores they have all the settings set up really high, so just because the picture might look good there, doesn't guarantee it will look as well in your place. Basically, do extra research on the specific models online.
