As a curious Brit, what do you folks get up to on the 4th? Big family get togethers? All-day partying? Nothing special?

I take it the 4th is a national holiday, does that mean a day off work for all?

It's unfathomable to me that people don't know what 4th of July is about. I'd think it was almost instinctual at this point, ingrained by genes, and known at birth :^/

It is certainly distressing. It should be instinctual. It's what i thought of as basic history or understanding of our country. It's also embarrassing. I'd be interested in a survey to see how many American's know the history behind it.

For whatever reason it reminds me of this video from Real Time with Bill Maher:

I can see a lot of people using a similarly stupid argument for the ignorance of history.

Was yelled at tonight by a neighbor for lighting a few fireworks tonight with my daughter. I guess trying to celebrate with some chinese fireworks does not sit well with the guy who has the loudest house most annoying barking dogs on the block every other day of the year.

My secret evil plan to piss off this hypocrite was a complete success.
