    Then there is this

AP Press- Washington DC August 16, 2011
Millionaire mogul Tom Jeffers, inventor of the “Clap on Clap off” device and the "Sham-Wow" announced today that he was investing $500,000.00 in a small militia army to take over the floating libertarian islands being developed by Pay Pal founder and early Facebook investor Peter Thiel. Apparently, Jeffers plans to wait until the islands are complete and then stage his takeover. When asked why, Jeffers replied, “It’s a hell of a lot cheaper than building them yourself. Plus people with such dumb hippy ass ideas are always panzies and so the take over should be relatively quick and easy”. Unfortunately, Jeffers sought to Paypal the malitia their first instalment payment…………... Jeffers is optomistic about his plan but admits that for now it is on hold.

My favorite part of the whole thing is this

Details says the experiment would be "a kind of floating petri dish for implementing policies that libertarians, stymied by indifference at the voting booths, have been unable to advance: no welfare, looser building codes, no minimum wage, and few restrictions on weapons."
It's a flipping dinner plate............... sitting on top of an oil rig.................in the middle of the flipping ocean...................

Where the hell are you going to build something......................

I wonder if they'll have loose building codes while they construct the rig.

I think this experiment has to happen, but I will be surprised if it doesn't fail.

Lol. Yeah I was wondering that myself. Who needs building codes right? They're only there because the government wants to intrude in our lives. Kinda like those pesky laws against murder. I'm wondering if the people that can afford to live there will want to do their own cleaning. If not, what ghetto will the Mexicans who get paid $.50 a day live? Surely these gazzillionaires won't be forced to live near them.

I think you guys are confusing a libertarian paradise with an anarchist paradise. Limited government, not no government.

I was thinking about this a lot today, and I think the governing model would work great. Even an anarchist paradise would be fine. Everybody's close enough that people aren't going to try shit cause there's nowhere to run to. You fsck someone over, your ass is toast. There's nothing like immediate accountability to keep people in line.

Same thing goes with the building codes. You're too far from help to risk shoddy building. See above for building a bad building for others.

The biggest drawback is provisioning the island. That, and boredom. I'd be cool sitting in the middle of the ocean, but a lot of people wouldn't. I'll put it this way. If I were allowed to claim a small piece of "land" in exchange for helping build the country, I'd pack my bags tomorrow. I'm pretty much done with this place.

Like any and every thing the devil is in the details and the details would be large in number in this concept, way over and above the governance implications. How the hell, for instance, could anyone design this massive construct to survive everything the ocean could throw at it? It would have to be overbuilt to the point of near insanity which solves one problem at least. It means that only the super-rich could afford to be residents and the attending security staff would mitigate any owner's chances of real harm. Cubic money can solve an awful lot of the types of problems envisioned by those here and for the mid-ocean concept to be successful the owners' resources would have to be essentially bottomless. If the thing ever gets built it will be a billionaire's toy/resort and little more. Lessons learned from the project, successful or otherwise, would have little impact on or import to us primitive land dwelling creatures.

One other thing. Donations totalling under two million bucks from the Shamwow King seem like chump change for such a gazillionaire. For a project of multi-billion dollar scope that doesn't even qualify as seed money.

Somewhere there was a trash island being made as an artistic concept, and to spotlight all the crap people dump in the ocean. That grabbed my attention at the time. There's no reason home has to be anchored to the sea floor. You could float around in international water picking up trash as you go to expand your territory. It might not be as fancy as Mr billionaire's idea, but I could live in a yurt on top of a bunch of floating plastic :^D

On my trash island? I'd likely be fuxxored. Hard to build good infrastructure on floating debris. On the anchored platform, fire could be contained by sprinklers, and fire retardant materials.
