I hit it with the electric trimmer to get it to a very reasonable length and then shave what I don't want to keep......the past few times has given me a couple ingrowns. I am going to try following the grain better.

I really don't let it get unruly.......it is too darn hot here in the summer to be as hairy as I am.

A zippo will rarely cause ingrown hairs ;-)

I start with the electric clippers, and then follow up with my DE. You're right to make sure you're shaving with the grain, once you cross it or go against it (especially in these tender areas) you're sure to get irritation. Just like all skin though, it will acclimate and become used to shaving. Just keep doing it pretty frequently....mine is part of my everyday shave. You might also try an alcohol based after shave, I'm not joking...yeah, it'll burn like a mofo but it will also brace the skin and kill bacteria that can cause ingrowns. We use aftershave on our faces, why not our "areas"...just don't get it in your pisshole, and if you do...please tell us how far you ran before the burning stopped ;-)
