    Valerian root

Anyone else give this stuff a go? I've been using it since Saturday to help me sleep and it definitely seems to be helping. Usually it takes me 2-3 hours to fall asleep, constant tossing and turning do to some stress. This stuff knocks me out pretty good I don't know if it is psychosamatic or what but now it only takes me an hour to fall asleep. My dreams are more detailed which isn't a great thing because I only have negative dreams nothing positive. The added rest is a plus though because I work 10 hour shifts.

Oh one thing is this stuff smells horrible. I got the damn capsules but it smells like stank ass feet.

I work shift work, so getting to sleep with all the 'jet lag' can be difficult. I take Promethazine (safe) and it hits me like a sledgehammer. I get it straight over the counter from the pharmacist.

I've tried Valerian before and I quickly built up a resistance to it. I don't build any resistance to promethazine.

Ha I googled that its an antihistamine.. I've been using Diphenhydramine HCL for the same reason which is an allergy medication. It used to work well but not anymore to help me sleep. Maybe I'll give the Promethazine a go. These medications sure are a mouthful eh? I had to grab the damn bottle to type it out. Just call the stuff goofballs and call it a day!

Promethazine works for me as well, however it is a controlled substance over here in the states, so you'd need a prescription...

I've been working 3rd shift and attending school full time in the morning, so I'm open to suggestions as well. Don't take anything right now, but any suggestions on how to get to sleep faster would be helpful, as being able to take 3-4 hour naps between school and work sometimes would be nice. I'm assuming Valerian root wouldn't be ideal as it is meant for longer periods of sleep?

I have honestly no idea why people use Promethazine to get high. It's just not that type of thing.

My god this is why I ask you guys questions. I googled different subjects concerning Valerian root such as tolerance, long term use etc. I'm getting a million different answers from "I've been using it for 8 years daily it's been great" to "You don't want to take it long term, withdrawal symptoms are similar to benzos!" Ha.. If life was simple I tell you..

Could you drink yerba mate tea instead of taking the L-theanine? Valerian knocks me out and puts me in too deep a sleep... makes me feel groggy the next day.

I'm 100% positive that valerian root will not give you withdrawal. It could only cause dependence if you can't get to sleep without it. But you can't get to sleep anyway - so catch 22.

But it will become less powerful the more you use it.

Can you get this from the pharmacy in the US?

I might be wrong Frosted but doesn't Nytol have valerian in the recipe?

The herbal version does but this doesn't. It contains diphenhydramine. Diphenhydramine doesn't agree with me.

Edit - sorry Eric - just re-read your post and see you've already tried this.
