FBI, DEA thwart terror plot in U.S. involving Iran, officials say

Editor's note: The FBI and the DEA have disrupted a plot involving Iran to kill the Saudi ambassador to the United States and commit other attacks, according to the U.S. Justice Department. Two men - one arrested, the other at large - have been charged in connection with the plot, which the Justice Department says was directed by elements of the Iranian government.

The Justice Department says one of the men – Manssor Arbabsiar, a naturalized U.S. citizen holding an Iranian passport – arranged to hire for the assassination someone in Mexico who he thought was an associate of a drug trafficking cartel. The person in Mexico actually was a DEA confidential source who was posing as a cartel associate, the Justice Department says.

Follow below for the latest developments and read the Justice Department complaint (PDF).

    this seems odd

Wow if Iran is behind this they're absolutely out of their mind the U.S. isn't Israel if something blows up here and it's traced back it's considered an act of war. Since we're not keen on fighting and having 200 dollar oil and stuff we might do more of an air/missile strike but you can't just sit back and do nothing.

I'm not a conspiracy guy but from a conspiracy standpoint this doesn't make sense it's not like whatever "other" business interests there're need another war and 200 dollar oil.

There's 2 ways of looking at this:

      1. This doesn't make any sense. As pointed out by former CIA agent Robert Baer: "This stinks to holy hell. The Quds Force are very good. They don't sit down with people they don't know and make a plot..."

It seems odd that Iran would contact some random person from a mexican drug cartel and pay them the measly sum of $1 million to plot a terrorist attack against a foreign diplomat in crowded areas of Washington DC. It would in theory leave no links to Iran, but the second this guy was caught he sung like a canary which seems odd.

      2. Iran is trying to instigate something and wanted to be caught. Iran is crumbling from within and the people there are becoming very anti-government (at least agains tthe current regime). In time they will collapse. So the only thing that would unify them is if the US attacked them for some reason. Perhaps this is a ploy to get the people to stop protesting and trying to overthrow the regime and instead band together again a common enemy (The US)?

It just seems weird that they would so slopily plan an attack that would lead to certain war for their country, and with an untrusted third party none the less. And what of the mexican drug cartels? They have been leaving american tourists alone and generally keeping it on their side of the border. If they started blowing up buildings and killing officials in the US we would be flying predator drones over Rosarito beach before the smoke even settled. It seems like this was a bad, not so well thought out plan by all parties involved.

All of this on the day when the underwear bomber decides to change his plea to guilty. Funny how all of the recent terrorist attacks were performed by idiots, and how the FBI is always there feeding them resources, money, and pushing them along the whole way (they gave this cartel member $50k in cash to buy the materials even).

I don't know, we'll have to wait for more of the detials, but this whole thing is just very odd. If Iran actually planned this, it was a very sloppy job and they should have known that this untrusted cartel member would end up getting sniffed out by the fez.

I'm not a conspiracy guy either but this stinks... Something here is clearly wrong.
The Iranian government aren't idiots and their soldiers are extremely well trained - and this is the act of amateurs!
        - Something is brewing but I don't know what.

To be honest I could make up something better than this (excuse the French) crappy piece of sh*t plan! If they wanted this done proper and without traces they would've sent someone from their own SpecOps since this more likely wouldn't have left any traces... At least not anything as direct as this random assassin.
My lil' conspiracy theory says that some other guys hired this guy, and made sure that when sings he'll be singing a completely different song... It could be some anti-Iran freak who hired this guy instead? I mean the world has a lot of rich nutters who would do anything to get what they want.

Yea, I call shenanigans. So lets get this straight..Eric Holder is in the hot seat for running guns to Mexico. He is just about to be subpoenaed by congressional investigators. But he stands on my TV telling me how the evil Iranians are plotting to kill a Saudi diplomat on American soil. And that the planning and the meetings pertaining to it happened in a Mexican border town shredded by cartel violence. Pledging more cooperation with the Mexican government. I'll bet that involves $ to shut the Mexicans up about gun running. Dog wagging..
