I give my children ALL the emotional support they need as well. YES I worry sometimes about the future, because I bloody well HAVE to - the Dalai f**king Lama does not.

When I die I WILL have lived. I have lived a very full life so far and if I successfully father two well balanced human beings, loved them and taught them how to love, I will have surpassed all that I could have expected.

This guy gets right on my tits with his supposed verbal wonders - what bugs me more is that people swallow this bullshit without questioning it simply because the Dalai pissing Lama said it. It's ok if you live in a Tibetan castle and don't have to work for a living I suppose. I think he's a f**king dick.
And maybe after all the escapism fails................and all the double speak falters......maybe.......just maybe....Frosted

you have hit upon true virtue

Bach beat a student in the head with his cane for not being able to hit the right note

Confucius beat an old monk in the head while the monk was meditating for being worthless

Maybe........... just maybe............. life was meant to be both lived.............and lived well

I don't want to agree with Frosted, but I do. Maybe because he came off as pretty hostile towards the quote. But he's completely correct. The Llama doesn't live in the same world as us. Even though it does seem a bit crazy to work ourselves into an early grave. I guess we just do what we have to do right?

It's a question of balance. It's worth keeping what he said in mind. People get too wrapped up in "acquiring", and not enough in "living". Sometimes enough is enough, and you don't have to be the richest fscker on the block. More isn't always better. Sometimes it's just more...

Yeah, sorry for the rant. I'd just had a long day - I can't stand the crap that spiritual or religious leaders dribble because they're pretty much all so far out of touch they might as well live on Mars.

I'm pretty sure he doesn't excludes himself from the quote though, but means "man" as in mankind, and all that goes in to it - our evolution to this point which has formed the kind of society we see right now. He's not sitting there on his throne getting fed grapes and mocking the rest of the world for working too hard.

We aren't the end all be all pinnacle of evolution. we're just one link in that chain. Perhaps one day money will be abolished, and when we get hungry, we'll just walk on down to the "food distribution center" and grab some chow. Maybe we'll spend our days writing sonnets or studying theoretical physics. It'll be like Star Trek where our only goal is to better ourselves and humanity. Not f^cking likely of course, but it doesn't hurt to live with some of those ideas in mind.
We could solve at least 50% of the world's problem by just not being assholes to each other. But apparently that's just the anti-american in me speaking.
Eventually we're going to have to find another way to live as a society. Materialism or capitalism if that's what you want to call it gets depressing at times. Hysteria and hype and the "gotta catch 'em all" attitude is really bringing many of us down. So many people are on edge or depressed from working their fingers to the bone with nothing to show for it. Maybe most of us are working the wrong way. Most people don't mind working hard; they just don't want to work stupid. Me for example: I'm a damn hard worker. I just like to believe in whatever it is I'm working for.
Of course, I'm full of shit. I'll be in my shitty job Monday morning working for my daughter, wife, house, 2 cars, and the Xbox.

I am not Buddhist but I do like the Dalai Lama. He is certainly not as overpaid as many entertainers out there and at least he is trying to promote a positive message. Eminem probably makes much more money than this guy bitching about his mamma in a rap song.. Perhaps this world would be a much better placed and if all of us got in tune just a little with our spirituality. I also respect him as he is not as divisive as many Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders. Buddhist principles can apply to almost any faith. He is also the spiritual leader of a country in constant conflict and he gives hope to millions of people.

I'll break down what annoys me about the quote:

                            1. "Man sacrifices his health in order to make money" - I work so that we can eat healthier, live in a clean house dry and warm house. People are living longer as a result. In Britain we do not sacrifice money to recuperate health. So this statement is FALSE.

                            2. "He is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present" - I think people live from day to day personally. I don't particularly worry about the future. I worry about it to a certain extent, but it doesn't affect my quality of life. So this statement is largely FALSE.

                            3. "He lives as if he is never going to die" - this is just the natural human condition and cannot be changed. If we constantly thought about death we'd be too terrified to exist.

                            4. "and then dies having never really lived" - this is the one that got me really irate because it is so desperately false. I already explained my reasons for disagreeing on this in my earlier rant.

We all talk about life from our own perspective so I believe that the Dalai Lama is speaking from his. What human in their right mind would deny themselves human relationships in the form of marriage or family life for religious or spiritual reasons. I can tell the Dalai Lama that there has been no greater joy, anxiety, hardship, or love etc. etc. than bringing life into this world and sustaining it. That he will never know - therefore HE is the one that will die having never really lived. From my perspective.

heh. thats just the ramblings of an old man. He needs to get a job.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

You bring up a few good points there. I took a day off a few months ago and spent a bit of time contemplating the theme of your message. The bottom line is that until a critical mass of people feel the same way, nothing will change. Due to the fact that we are all humans, it won't ever happen. Doesn't mean that I don't spend time with my kids, teach them to be good people and enjoy the smell of the roses every once in a while. I know if I think back about my childhood, the best times were not the times with the most, and I would hazard a guess that my kids best memories aren't the time I bought them an iPhone, a new Xbox or a new computer.
