I've always been a Glenlivet man, myself, but the mob is right...it's not particularly anything "special". It's a really drinkable, not overpowering, go-to single malt. Personally, I think Laphroaig tastes like mothballs, so I'll generally stick to Glenlivet or Johnny Walker (yes, I know it's a blend, but it's actually good!). On a sidenote, I've tried every Johnny Walker label from red all the way up to blue (including the tough to find gold and green labels), and in 100% honesty, in terms of enjoyment vs. money, black label IS the best Johnny Walker. Also IMO, green label is better tasting than blue. Maybe it's just me, but blue seemed like the flavors were all muddled together whereas I could taste a lot more in the green.

I had a pris of General los in and was drinking Jameson! That's wierd...yeah, it was really good though. And last night I was enjoying General los with Sam Adam's Summer Ale and Offroad Cranberry los with Blue Moon.

I prefer balvenie doublewood and/or lagavulin.

That being said, My real alcoholic vice is fine sipping rum. Nothing as vile as bacardi anything.

Ron Zacapa Centennario is my alltime fav

The double wood is my favorite of the line. I haven't been buying much in the way of spirits lately, but I'd like to try some quality rums. A couple of years ago I realized how delicious tequila could be if you stayed away from from the rail Quervos. I've been wanting to revisit the higher end of all the spirits I've dismissed in the past. I'd like to see what kind of treasures I've overlooked.

              Scotch is not for me.

However I do enjoy Irish whiskey, bourbon, and American and Canadian whiskey.

I would say Crown Royal Special reserve is my favorite followed by Woodford Reserve.

Crown Royal has a few variations out now, but the normal one is still high on my enjoyment list.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed is quite nice. It's barrel strength so not all bottles are the same proof. Every now and then I have a Maker's Mark. The damn bottle is hard to open though.

I also enjoy Bushmill's, Tullamore Dew, and Jameson's. Bushmill's Black is too peaty for me. Hence my aversion to scotch.

Some of the small batch Bourbons are nice. I went a year trying several different brands. Knob Creek would be my favorite small batch. I think it's actually produced by Jim Beam, may be wrong.

Everything I've just mentioned I drink with a splash of water or on the rocks.

As far as mixing whiskey, I go to Jim Beam or Wild Turkey 101. Just a splash of cola is fine over ice.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Yep, I'm a bourbon man myself... Either Beam and water, or beer and a shot of Turkey... I like Maker's Mark from time to time too...

Since I've lived in WI, I've taken a liking to whiskey old fashioned too... That cocktail is really popular here...

Personally I drink Johhnie Walker Gold or Blue.

Now i only get one bottle of the blue a year because its $300 a bottle here

Gold Label ($90) is something i buy regularly but i dont go through it fast at all.

I enjoy it too much to just pound it down. I take it straight with no ice and just sip it. Very complex blended scotch.

Single Malt would have to be McClellan aged 15 yrs or better

I also enjoy Evan Williams Single Barrel Bourbon, best out of all the low to mid priced bourbons.

Some magazines have rated it as high as 94-96 above the other single barrel bourbons and its got a nice smooth finish.

The most expensive bourbon ive had was Bookers Bourbon at $120 which was 127 proof.

You couldnt tell it by how smooth it was and had a very nice pallet to it.

bakerbarber: I love Woodford Reserve, I didn't think anyone else really drank it. It's really caramel-y...if that's an adjective...good sweetness to balance the alcohol sting.

grim: I think earlier I mentioned JW gold/blue. For the money, I say gold is every bit as good as blue; and by that I mean blue isn't 150 bucks better tasting. I disagree, however, with drinking it neat...not that it's a bad way to drink it, but I think an ice cube or two adds just enough water to really open up the flavors. I've tasted several whiskeys/scotches neat and on the rocks, and the difference between them when compared side-by-side is amazing; it's almost like two entirely different liquors.

I have to disagree with that, somewhat anyway. Cold numbs the tastebuds. I've never had a whisky that I thought was improved by being chilled, well maybe some of the cheap ones ;^)

I'll go with a touch of water on occasion, but never ice. That applies to all spirits. If it has to be chilled to taste good, it probably shouldn't be drank.

Interesting point. I find that one or two ice cubes in 3 oz or so of whiskey only brings the temperature down to cool, though, as opposed to "cold" or worse.

I was a sommelier for about a year when I worked in Annapolis, so I am familiar with the effects of temperature on the tastebuds, though.
