Pictures from an abandoned insane asylum.

Relatively near to my, there's an abandoned insane asylum called the Hudson River State Hospital. Over a number of years, buildings on the 160 acre campus were gradually abandoned, and it finally got completely closed down 10 years ago. Some of the buildings are pretty awesome looking, though inside the whole place looks like everyone just up and vanished. By all accounts, the property owner doesn't particularly mind people sneaking in to just take pictures, though he gets pretty pissed off (and reasonably so, I'd say) by the scrappers who come in to grab all the copper in the building. Thought you guys might enjoy some of the pictures, so here they are. Apologies for quality, but crappy camera phone is crap. I'm not really sure what's going to happen to these buildings, seeing as they've been abandoned so long. I'm hoping they can be fixed up and repurposed, though, as a number of them are really beautiful. Only had the opportunity to explore three buildings this time, and took pictures in two. There's plenty of pictures around the internet of these buildings for those who're interested, though as far as I know I'm the first to upload a picture of the graffiti in this first picture below.

Perhaps some day there'll be enough of us here to do a snus/snuff meet up for the local area.

        Wow, intresting pictures!

This should be an abandoned places thread, there's a lot of such cool and also scary places around the world, if I have time some day I'll go and take pics of a old soviet military base, where soldiers and their families lived once.

Reading another page, that graffiti in the first pic must be about 1 year old or newer. This article features a picture of the same room (the third one down, taken from a different angle than my own) where the wall is completely clean. I wonder who did that painting there, and why? Very few people are likely to see it, considering we had to climb in through a window, and then crawl through a tunnel under the length of the building, and then make a series of turns and trips upstairs in order to find it.

Edit: I'd second the abandoned places thread. Some of them are pretty awesome.

Well, that's Poughkeepsie for you. A lot of the buildings they don't seem to have gotten into yet. Scrappers have really ruined the Cheney Building though. They even stole the toilets out of some of the bathrooms.

Yep, even the toilets. Depending on time and other factors, further expeditions may take place here. If so, I'll update the thread. Might also go to some other areas instead, and do a bit of roaming. I'd kind of like to sneak out to Bannerman's Island someday, sans a tour group. There's also Letchworth Village a little bit away. We're considering checking out some of the abandoned factories in Newburgh, but I don't particularly relish getting stabbed by some crack head living in one of them, so we'll have to think about that.

Yeah I've seen pics of that Bannerman's island, that one is really massive construction!

For those unaware, ye olde Bannerman's Castle:

Getting there would be a bit of a pain in the ass, seeing as we'd have to take a row boat or kayak out. Probably would be much easier to launch from the east bank, though

This stuff is fascinating to me. I love old and abandoned sites.

When I lived in Greenwood Lake, NY I explored this place...

                            Fantastically freaky. I loved it.

I wonder how many lead paint particles are floating in that hallway?
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.
