I'm also a sucker for the critters. There's a bunch of feral cats that live outside the library where I work. I leave food out for them every night when I leave.

I also go to an old folks home down the street to play cribbage most Sunday afternoons. It's not that popular a game these days (on this side of the pond anyway) so the old timers are always looking for a good game.

All in all, I'm no Mother Teresa. Maybe some of the stories posted here will guilt me into doing more….

      Bingo!!

I'm certain that if the occasion arises you will be there to help in an emergency.

My 'big' moment isn't huge but I'd like to think it made a few guys feel appreciated. A few Thanksgivings ago I learned that a group of appx 20 single soldiers were planning on spending Tgiving in the barracks. I couldn't allow that though so I had my husband invite them over. I cooked a huge traditional meal, had coolers of beers, snacks and football on the tv for them. I have a huge heart, especially for people alone during times that should be spent with family.

Reminded of the time my husband tried to help a huge snapper trapped in the turning lane on a busy 4 lane road...he jumped out of the car and waved at motorists to slow down and made his way to the center lane...most cars obeyed and slowed, another driver even stopped and helped by waving at cars, all was good except for this turd of a pizza delivery girl who screamed past all of the slowed cars, passing them in the turn lane and nailed the turtle, feet away from my husband! Anyway, he scooped that poor injured fella up, put it in the backseat and chased the driver down and tore her a new one! She needed the lesson on driving and what not to do when you see gd break lights and a crazy man in the middle of the road. My husband is a softie when it comes to critters but at that point, he was more pissed that she nearly hit him. The turtle was taken to the vet and pronounced doa.

I like the spirit of this thread but have to respectfully decline from adding. I dunno, something about blowing one's own horn doesn't seem right to me. Especially on the internet..... When you give it should be between you the recipient and the fence post AFAIC.......

I could write several things in this thread, but I'll stick to the biggest thing that has consumed my time and effort the past nine long years... When a crisis situation exits, I have been working with the troops and/or their families to ensure they get whatever help is needed. Everything from talking down the former Marine with a gun in his mouth to the national guard wife that needs help around her home. Sometimes it's a simple as being a listening ear at 3 a.m., other times it's lots of work to get the professionals lined-up to help the family out. It's not something I set about to do. I actually started by lobbying and protesting my government officials about military issues and came to be known as someone who could get stuff done and I had many of the contacts in the right places from my former job as a journalist. Since my husband is still active duty, I try to keep my full name out of things because there are those out there that could have a problem with what I do. I never imagined I would be doing things like this in my life, but it got to the point that I could no longer sit on the sidelines and keep my mouth shut about the problems I was seeing everyday.

Agreed. Good sentiment, but if I had fed a village of starving orphans in Ethiopia prime rib and built them a hospital and a Nintendo with my bare hands, I'm not going to run to the internet and tell anyone. Seems vulgar somehow. How about recognizing the good things others have done for you?

Since 1976, I have been a member of both the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as part of the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service. I've provided emergency communications services for almost every major national and global disaster since then... some from my home and others as an onsite technical adviser. These are volunteer positions and the operators do not receive any financial compensation. During officially declared emergencies, the government does provide you with medical and life insurance when you are ordered to an on site location. I've worked floods, hurricanes, tropical storms, tornadoes, earthquakes, wildfires and even tsunamis. To find out more about RACES, click here. To learn more about Amateur Radio, click here.

I tend to agree. Most people that do truly great/heroic things aren't usually the type to toot their own horn.

But maybe the OP can be edited to include "things done for you" or "people that you know that have done deeds deserving mention". Being the very cynical person that I am, I could use a glimmer of hope every now and then that maybe humans aren't slowly but surely turning into a bunch of phuckheads.

Tooting one's own horn would be if someone came on here and revealed their true identity. All I see is that certain usernames have posted stories of compassion which I see as uplifting and inspirational. I can't help but feel challenged to do and give more after reading these stories. I have no idea who the 'real' "ChaoticGemini" is except that this user is apparently a female, so is this person really tooting their own horn?? Sorry CG- just using your id as an example because I couldn't think of any other usernames at this moment. For all you guys know, I could really be PP's mistress locked in his basement. I'm just trying to show that your story of compassion is NOT tooting your own horn when nobody knows who you are. Keep the stories coming! I am sick of reading on the news of the $hit that named & photographed psychos do to others. At the same time, if you still feel uncomfortable, by all means, don't share your story, party pooper!
