A guy was fired for not wearing a "666" button...

ATLANTA —A Georgia factory worker claims in a federal lawsuit that he was fired after he refused to wear a `666' sticker he feared would doom him to eternal damnation.

Billy E. Hyatt claims he was fired from Pliant Corp., a plastics factory in northern Georgia near Dalton, after he refused to wear a sticker proclaiming that his factory had been accident-free for 666 days. That number is considered the "mark of the beast" in the Bible's Book of Revelation describing the apocalypse.

Hyatt, who said he's a devout Christian, had worked for the north Georgia plastics company since June 2007 and like other employees wore stickers each day that proclaimed how long the factory had gone without an accident.

But he grew nervous in early 2009 as the number of accident-free days crept into the 600s. As the company's safety calendar approached day 666, Hyatt said he approached a manager and explained that wearing it would force him "to accept the mark of the beast and to be condemned to hell." He said the manager assured him he wouldn't have to wear the number.

When the day came on March 12, 2009, Hyatt sought a manager to discuss his request. He said he was told that his beliefs were "ridiculous" and that he should wear the sticker or serve a three-day suspension.

Hyatt took the three-day suspension, and was fired at a human resources meeting several days later. He then filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and his attorney Stephen Mixon said the agency granted him the right to sue the company in August.

The lawsuit, which seeks punitive damages and back pay, said the company forced him into a terrible situation: Keep his job or "abandon his religious beliefs."

The company, now known as Berry Plastics Corp., did not return several calls and emails seeking comment. It has yet to respond to the complaint in court.

Personally I think it would be cool as hell!

If the facts are as presented the company deserves to loose in a big way.

I know there are many here that have differing beliefs, including not believing in any higher power.

Eric....what if they required you to put a fish on your car

Being an atheist, I still believe the company overstepped by punishing the man for refusing to wear a pin -- everyone is entitled to their beliefs. Conversely, I would refuse to wear a "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Easter" pin.

The guy is an idiot for believing that a sticker reading 666 would make him go to hell. The company are idiots for making people wear stupid stickers instead of focusing on getting the work done. When two idiots collide, nothing good can come of it.

That's my position. I am a Christian. I am also an American who believes in religious freedom. And that includes the right to not believe in any religion.

The whole thing is stupid. First, how much does the company lose by printing new stickers every day? Second, being non-religious myself, at the very least they could have let the guy just not wear the sticker for the day since the very next day it would have changed to the 667 stickers.

On the same topic, I have had cashiers freak out when my total comes to 666 (which happens a lot) and it always makes me smile.

So much fail all around, I don't know what to say. I think they're all idiots, and deserve each other. The guy should get his job back, so we can keep them all together, and keep our eyes on them. We don't need idiots like that running around in the world at large.

He should have just turned it upside down and claimed to be a Herman Cain supporter.

The company should have just let it go. Now they are going to end up in court which is really ridiculous.

You have to wonder if they really wanted to fire this guy and just needed a reason. I hear stories about how people got fired all the time. Sometimes that one incident is just the straw that broke the camels back. Think about it this way, this company probably spent several thousand dollars training this employee and he has been there for several years. Are they really firing him over a button? I am not saying it can't happen, it's just that the odds are against it.

This won't end up in a trial. The company's insurance company will settle and this guy will get a nice payday. Well, after his lawyer takes 30% off the top.

Good for him for standing up for his beliefs.

Have to agree with this. I mean seriously, who gives a damn if one guy doesn't wear a sticker in the factory? Is everyone else suddenly going to forget how many days they've been accident free? Once he explained his objection to it, though, they should've scrapped the plan and come up with something else. If this guy raised a serious objection on this subject, they should have known it would've turned out this way. And they make it even worse by lying to him at first and telling him nothing would happen.
