They can be a bit pricey to buy and install but a good pellet stove will pay for itself. There is a great forum run by hearth.com if you are into pellet or wood heat.

I am not sure if they are available there but Enviro makes a model called "Empress" that looks as great as it heats. That is the one I would like to save up for. I am glad we decided to invest in a pellet stove. We have propane and kerosene available but their prices tend to fluctuate wildly. I used to use a regular wood stove insert and I hated it. You have to clean those almost daily, they take a long time to heat up the house and they go through a lot of wood. I used to use the wax logs but those can really add to your heating expense. The main drawbacks to using a pellet stove are lugging around 40lb bags of pellets and finding good technicians to service pellet stoves. The techs around here tend to be idiots that come out and charge you $100.00 to misdiagnose your problem. That's how I found hearth.com forum. They actually have good techs in there who will help you for free if you run into any issues.

between the electricity for air conditioning and everything else in the summer and electricity for other things and gas to heat the buildings during the winter I'd say about $380 a month average. sucks big time

Your just jealous that I can heat my home for around $80 a month. I would also like to get a swamp cooler one day. The air here is dry enough in the Summer to run a swamp cooler without risking damage to your home. They are not as good as an air conditioner but they do cool down a room nicely and do not cost a lot to run.

My little experiment in not using central heat is starting to worry me. I'm adjusting to the cooler temperatures, and when summer(which I despise) comes around again, it'll be even more miserably hot. I woke up this morning, and thought it felt pretty warm in the house. The thermostat said it was 51F. It appears my new standard for "chilly" is the 40s :^/

I like the idea of using the fiber board cans as fire starters. I have an uber small house, and I don't care to spend too much heating or cooling it. I prefer winters. A hat makes a big difference.

When I can see my breath, it's too cold. I think running the furnace makes the humidity too low and I start getting itchy and scratchy. Then my floorboards start creaking. I need a humidifier.
