Probiotics.. anyone ever try this crap?

Ok I'm on all these vitamins and all and now I added probiotics to the mix. Trying to keep my poop issues down so to say..

"Probiotic therapy may also help people with Crohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Clinical trial results are mixed, but several small studies suggest that certain probiotics may help maintain remission of ulcerative colitis and prevent relapse of Crohn’s disease and the recurrence of pouchitis (a complication of surgery to treat ulcerative colitis). Because these disorders are so frustrating to treat, many people are giving probiotics a try before all the evidence is in for the particular strains they’re using. More research is needed to find out which strains work best for what conditions."

I obtained the Centrum version today.

I was wondering if any of you guys have given probiotics a shot and have you experienced any affects either good or bad. I'm just taking a shot in the dark with this crap because my wife's friend has it and said it helped her. All I know is I'm drinking a bunch of bacteria I overpaid for at this point.

I've heard that pro-biotics are to be taken when you are on antibiotic treatment, but they alone might be good for Chron's haven't read anything about it though.

I don't believe it will be harmful in any way. Hopefully it will work out good for me. One word of advice, don't mix it with water it tastes horrible haha.

I give a form of avian probiotics to the birds once or twice a week. helps keep them healthy
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

I've heard of probiotics promoted as an ingredient in dog food. I'm not being a wise ass (but I want to be) but I can remember the radio commercial.

Metamucil is my poop-aid. Love the stuff. My wife gets on a bender of eating tons of yogurt with added biotics, or enzymes, or bacteria, or whatever the hell is in it from time to time.

They DO work; however, don't expect results overnight. Supplements, in general, take about a month before they kick in. Initially, you may think they are not doing anything; however, take them for a month and then abruptly stop. That's when you'll see and feel the difference.

Eric, you are in need of a protocol for your specific problem. DON'T try alittle of this and then alittle of that and expect immediate results. You should check out this site to understand what I'm talking about concerning a specific protocol: http://www.crohns.net/Miva/education/aboutcrohns.shtml Additionally, a protocol needs to be "find tuned" based on your specific individual needs.

I've been practicing Holistic Healing since 1994. PM me if you are looking for specific recommendations from leading alternative doc's in this field. You'll be amazed what the right protocol can do for you.

                Good luck.

My daughter is on a modified diet because of allergies. She can't eat dairy, wheat or eggs. We have her on probiotics to keep her pooping right.

I got some for me as well as I eat almost the same diet now.

Probiotics work for sure. Never tried the Centrium brand, but just what they have at GNC.

I had an issue about 15 years ago due to my coffee travel mug, because if you don't clean them with bleach, bacteria can grow in all the little crevices and slots on that lid, and then the bad bacteria that's growing there will overwhelm the good bacteria in your gut. I finally figured out what the problem was. In the meanwhile to get everything back on track and working right, I used probiotics. I also found that green tea is good at flushing out your system and apples are good at regulating you, no matter if things are too loose or too firm.

I regularly used probiotics after that for a while, but now only occasionally. From my experience probiotics can provide help in as little as a day or two if all you need is a boost, and for more serious issues can take a couple of weeks or more before you see a difference. I never strictly followed the directions for use, which on the ones I have now is two capsules after every meal. At first when I was having real problems, I followed that, but then cut down to taking them only after one or sometimes two meals a day. I've never found yogart to make any difference, but maybe it depends on the type and all that.

I just started giving my cat probiotics from Pet Smart, because he's old and is having some issues, so I'm hoping they work well for him, too. It's too early to tell yet.

If you've been on antibiotics than you may need a pro-biotic but if you are eating relatively healthy than I don't think you really need a pro-biotic.
