DuckDuckGo changing your hostname. I used a tweak tool to change it on my system, but it should be easy enough to do it manually if you find where it is. Maybe you can do it within irrsi?

Not sure how to change that. I think I just need to figure out where irssi draws the name from so that I can change it locally on my computer.
in the command line type: finger yourusername

I think this is where it's getting it from.

      also in irssi
      /SET real_name
      Your real name.

edit: If you want to change your real name in linux so it doesn't affect other programs, edit your /etc/passwd file. It should be the "comment" field.

Be careful with this! you will need root access to modify as well so there's that.

All I have to say here is Torvalds for President.

OpenSuSE is the greatest thing since the invention of the wheel. I haven't run windows on any device in 6 years and I own an android phone.

If it's not open-source I probably don't need it anyway, and as far as games go, there's frontends for windows emulation so games run as if native in linux (i.e., cedega, playonlinux, wine). That is of course providing there's a game I wanna play other than Guild Wars.

Beyond that virii simply exist as theoretical programs due to rapid fire updates to the OS, consequently it's damn near impossible to become infected, partially because most virii are coded for windows by some 13 year old asian running linux anyway.

In the years since I turned my OEM windows discs into xmas decorations and clocks I can't recall a time when my pc crashed and I'm not sure what the BSOD looks like for linux (i have seen screenshots though). I've had a kernel flop or 2, but my music doesn't even stop playing. The screen blanks, comes back, X restarts (bringing video back), the desktop reappears and all my windows are still there with exactly what I was doing at the exact moment of the flop.

            Beat that Apple and MS.

            *End of rant*

I LOVE linux, for a server. IMO for an average desktop user, it is perfect (way easier to support). For me, I need windows for gaming. BF3, IL2, and my CH HOTAS don't work so well in linux. Even if I am manage to get a game running in WINE or cedega or whatever, it is still slower than running native in windows.

I primarily use Ubuntu but I've dabbled with Arch and fedora. I use multiple monitors and this is an area that linux (ok gnome) needs to work on. If they mimic windows "Primary monitor" I would be very happy. Pisses me off when I move my taskbar(?) and all that jazz over to the right monitor and every time I open a new window, it opens on the left!!!! even if I move them over, close them no matter what they're still going on the left monitor. infuriating!

Sound card support is hit or miss. Sometimes out of the blue, my sound will just stop working all together.

I know linux is supposed to be more stable but I have way more crashing with ubuntu than windows (7.x to 11.x).

My "clients" that I support who run linux as a desktop environment couldn't be happier though.

I am actually trying to get it changed on my Window partition. I have been playing a lot of Starcraft II lately so i've been in Windows a lot more. Does anyone know how to change the name in windows?

You could also try using Pidgin for IM. They have a native Windows client.

Lol. I am just familiar with Irssi since shiki introduced me to it so i've grown used to using it.

Man I gotta thank you all again for your help in introducing me to the wide world of Linux. I'm learning slowly and have really been enjoying the whole experience. I was able to get into a small private tracker recently and was able to use my new very basic understanding of linux to get a seedbox set up, learned how to use rtorrent from the command line in it, and finally mastered using screen (not mastered, but can at least move around freely lol). That doesn't sound like a lot but I am sort of learning from scratch here.

And not a moment too soon, the Raspberri Pi is coming out hopefully some time next week and it only runs debian from what I understand so now I will be able to use it!

The epic linux threads I miss not being on this forum for a while. For the record I use a mixture of Arch for desktop and FreeBSD for servers. I still have Fedora hanging out on a laptop or two but I plan to switch them over to arch linux soon enough.
