Apparently it was more popular than I thought.

Yah they crashed two of the worlds largest electronics distributors websites in less than a minute, they stayed down for about 6 hours. Only a sparing few were able to get in, many people got to the checkout process but upon clicking "buy" they just got Ajax errors.

I am very jaded by this mess for them. I had reason to consider it, and it is interesting and all, for experimental purposes. But I don't really need more computers in the house and of course something this novel costing more than about starts getting into the range of budget netbooks, an already proven sales model for linux computing.

I wouldn't let this put you off. I knew it was going to be a clusterfsck. That's one reason I wasn't excited to get in early. It's like people trying to grab $100 TouchPads. There was just too much hype surrounding it. Let the frenzy die down, and the early adopters figure out cool things to do, and get in on the next batch. The supply system will be tweaked, and it should go a lot smoother.

It's $55 because it's $20 shipping as it comes from the UK from what I understand. This is essentially a pre-order for the next batch, which should get to their warehouse on 3/30 and comes with 2-3 day shipping.

I personally dislike pre-order. I mean first of all this is not a need item so why give a company an interest free loan.

I just purchased on about 30 min ago, the $20 is added on during checkout for all Us customers.


As for the pre-order, the thing is that this is a non-profit so they have to use sales to fund the production of these. They are manufacturing them as they are purchased, so the manufacturer is only making the amount of models that are being purchased at any given time. Therefore it will be a while before the company has enough money to keep an inventory of these things and you will have to pay first in the meantime.

Resist presale wins for now. Just put in a big snus order so maybe next month. I have no urgent needs for new computer hardware at this moment anyway.

now I gotta decide, should I buy less snus and a pi or should I buy a fat order of snus and not buy the pi cause I have no practical use for one. I still want one tho lol.

I just put in a pre-order at that site. I guess we'll see how soon it ships out. As an anime and manga fan, I've learned to deal with pre-orders. I've seen too many series I liked dropped midway through because people all said, "Well, I don't really need it now. I guess I'll just wait until the price drops a bit..." With that experience, if I really want something, I'll jusr preorder right away. Now, to get install images for other distros. I remember seeing that Fedora, Debian and Arch were going to be supported out of the box, and I'd rather ditch Fedora in favour of Arch, if for no reason other than consistency. Guess I'll also have to look into buying/building a case for this thing.

As for this threads activity, I guess I'd chalk it up to Linux and snus both attracting the oddballs of any groups, to a certain extent. This thread would also be about 9 pages shorter if it weren't for the incredible failure that was sgreger1's first forays into Linux with Ubuntu. There's a good 4 or 5 pages of lx and I trying to make it work for him, followed by another 4 or so lx valiantly continuing the battle while I beat my head against the wall saying, "Ubuntu won't work. It's impossible."

So more than half of this thread is basically just the three of us nerding out on the rest of the board.

Lol, yah up until like 5 pages ago the whole thread was just me failing at installing Ubuntu, while shikki screamed from a local rooftop how my graphics drivers were mucking up the whole thing and to just try Fedora. Then about 3 posts on me installing Fedora and everything working great. Worth it though, i'm glad I finally took the plunge, i'm on my linux boot right now. I want to try archlinux so I may try that once the Pi comes out, just because I don't know by how much they will strip down Fedora. I imagine arch will be much more lightweight regardless of how much they strip fedora and on the Pi i don't care about the OS that much, gotta save space and processor speed for actually using the damn thing so Arch will probably be the better of the two choices.

As far as the case, they are making one that will come out in the summer, you can buy one from them. I figure it will survive until them, plus i'm sure a few commercial versions of a case will pop up eventually as well.


Edit: Also, for those wondering, if you buy a Raspberry Pi right now, I and everyone else just got an email that says it will be delivered on 5/10/12. So expect that wait baby!
