Looking to buy a new pc...

    Quick question..

Getting the tax refund soon and I'd like to get a new pc for the house. All we will really use it for is web browsing, music, video posting and editing, and netflix. I'm really interested in learning how to do the netflix streaming throughout the house. We have a good lenovo monitor so would just need the tower. How much ballpark would a good unit cost? Would it be better to buy online or best buy etc? Brands?

Should I go with Apple maybe? I hate worrying about damn viruses.. the simplicity would be refreshing.

      coupon Eric....coupon
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Wait so do you do anything advanced that would require a crazy amount of processing power or would you consider yourself an "average" user? If you just want a desktop to check emails, skype, play video etc they can be had for like $500 right now. For $1300 you can get the most boss computer setup available that isn't custom built. It just kind of depends on what you will be doing with it.

Edit: Namely, will you be doing any gaming, Adobe After Effects, 3d rendering, etc? If not that get a nice $500-700 computer, it will do more than you need.

I am thinking Eric will mostly be using it to view porn. My guess is he will need a computer that handles pictures and videos well.

This one doesn't look to bad

Luckily, porn has few requirements. Since Eric will mostly be viewing gay porn, I am guessing he can get a real bargain here.

guaranteed the best, cheapest place to get any kind of computer/electronic gadget. tigerdirect has some decent stuff from time to time...but I have yet to find anything better than the egg.

For a prebuilt I always look at Dell first. They get good deals in their outlet section. For parts, I second Newegg. They aren't always the cheapest, but for a complete order, they're very competitive, and the service is first rate. You can be pretty sure your interaction with Newegg will be hassle free.

Eric, buy apple if you are doing basic stuff and have the money. It will probably be the least hassle and last the longest without you needed to do any maintenance on it. But it will cost you more.

If you are technically inclined, get a PC and install linux on it, than you don't have to worry about viruses.

If you want a PC, I third newegg.com, they have a reputation of being a good company. A PC will be substantially less than a Mac by almost $1000. Think to yourself, is having less hassle and not having to worry about viruses worth an extra $500-$1,000?

And really, viruses aren't an issue even on regular Windows based computers. Just get microsoft security essentials (free download from their website), and that's about all you really need.

Eric get a dell XPS 15'' Laptop and be done with it, you can use your existing monitor with it as well. Get what you can afford and let it ride. I've owned them for years also most of the software engineers in my group own them as well. Warranty and Support are very important and theirs is one of the best.
