    Has anyone quit coffee?

I'm considering quitting coffee. Has anyone else done this? How long does the withdrawal effects last?

I love the taste of coffee, but I'm starting not to like the caffeine effects. They only seem to last for a short period of time, and I most often crash a few hours later. It seems to affect my concentration rather bad as well (except for the first hour).

Every time I've tried this before has been a failure... I've only managed to keep from it for a couple of days, until the headaches and me missing the taste of it started drinking it again.

I only drink 1 or 2 large mugs of strong coffee per day, but I still get some pretty crazy withdrawal symptoms.

Any advice or tips would be helpful!

"crash a few hours later"?????...what are you talking about? Crashing implies that at some point in the day you actually stop drinking coffee. My suggesstion is drink it all day long, no crash!!

I've found it very easy to quit coffee. I get a blinding headache for a day, but then I'm good to go. If you love coffee, I'd suggest increasing your uptake. That way you adjust to he caffeine, and it doesn't have much of an effect on you. I drink 1-2 pots per day, and aside from headache if I don't drink coffee, I don't have any negative effects.

I have quit quiting stuff, whenever I try, it only makes me miss it, and I hate missing things, so no more quitting for me.

Hahahah! Yeah, that might be the problem when I drink only one cup in the morning. However, if I drink more, I feel like crap!

That's true! However, when I drink a lot of coffee, and combined with snus (never got it with cigarettes), I get wicked crazy feelings close to a panic attack. Don't know why, haha. I get jittery as hell and racing worrying thoughts, and feel unreal.

I would love to up my intake but it's irritating feeling like that. Maybe exposure is the way to go? Doing it for a time until I master the feelings?

Once again I did not experience this before, but it's like snus has made me more sensitive to the stuff. It sucks!

I dunno. Other than brief breaks, I've drank coffee regularly since I was about 10. I quit a few times when going on "health" kicks, whatever the hell that means. It's not like coffee is especially bad for you :^D Like Coder, I've quit quitting. I like tea, and herb tea, but it just isn't coffee. A coffeeless life is just about unthinkable to me. Try increasing the coffee, but reducing he nicotine. Use more snuff instead of snus, and see how it goes. If that works out, you'll accomplish 2 things. You'll get to have delicious coffee, and you'll spend less money cause snuff is cheaper than snus.

On the flip side, maybe you're just hypersensitive to caffeine. That would be a tragedy if it couldn't be overcome :^(

              I did this twice.

First time I just went off of it cold-turkey. Headache? That wasn't the word for it...it's was insane. I had that pounding, throbbing, wretched headache for nearly three days. It was hell, I tell you. Then it was gone and I found that I actually woke up earlier and more chipper than I used to when drinking the coffee. Since caffeine is water-soluble it should only take 72 hours to go through any sort of withdrawal. It sucks though.

I did go back on coffee for whatever reason. The second time I quit it I bought a #10 can of regular and one of decaf. I started mixing them and each time I increased the proportion of decaf until it was 100% and I didn't even notice it. Weening, I guess it's called. Worked like a charm.

Now I'm on coffee again. Screw it. I like the stuff.

I tried quitting as i have it with sugar. Quitting it was horrible so i started again. Then i just sort of cut down without trying - i only have 2 cups a day now. But i drink tea too.

I’ve tried quitting coffee loads of times, without success! Every time i try it’s a bloody nightmare. You drink 1 or 2 cups and get crazy withdrawal on that small amount! My withdrawals are hell, headaches that last for a couple days, sweats, can’t concentrate, clammy sweaty palms, can’t sleep, the works and more. If I can get down to a regular 5 mugs a day, i would be happy with that! I like the stuff, so I don’t really want to quit, but like snus, i want to get it under control!

Coffee isn't terribly hard to quit IMO. You will get a head-ache for about a day and it takes about 3 days for the caffeine to clear from your body completely. Of course there are benefits to coffee as recent studies have shown a link between coffee consumption and a decreased risk of alzheimer's disease. But caffeine tends to effect your brain for a much longer time than you may imagine and often heavy consumption will lead to sleepless nights and groggy mornings.

Perhaps switching to de-caffinated coffee to begin with would be a good start, as it will still give you the taste but with reduced levels of caffeine.. From there you can cut back on intake. Just a suggestion.

                      Hell...no.

Like lxskllr, I drink 1-2 pots a day and have for years. I've built up my tolerance nicely. Until it starts affecting my health adversely (i.e. increased blood pressure/heart rate), I see no reason to quit or even reduce my intake.

Perhaps some decaf or half-caf throughout day to keep you going?? Check this article out and enjoy a cup of coffee!

I went totally caffeine free for about a year, quit all forms cold. Withdrawal was surprisingly physical for me - headaches, limbs aching like with a flu, sleepless nights tossing and turning - lasted a few days and then I was right as rain.

I'm back on it now but every now and again will have a week off just to detox - subsequent detox weeks haven't been anywhere near as bad the first one.

I go through phases of caffeine intake. Some days I drink coffee and tea all day long. Some days I don't have a sip. Just what I want at the time.

To quit completely? Probably not easy but a day or so off doesn't bother me.

I drink approx 12-16 oz in the morning then don't have any during the rest of the day. Very occasionally I will be super tired and want some in the afternoon. I've never noticed any physical effects when I don't have any around, which I suppose really only happens when I travel to Asia and it's not available -- for me it's good, strong coffee, or nothing. I don't usually settle for instant coffee. So yeah when I'm at home I always have at least some in the morning, but not what I consider to be an excessive amount, and I don't consider myself dependent on it based on 1 to 3 week periods I've experience without it.
