OFF TOPIC: Want to upload PDF with direct link.

I want people who click on a link to go automatically to a PDF file. I don't want there to me an intermediate page, like an upload service where you have to wait 30 seconds for the download. Is there a way of doing this if i don't have my own domain?

    Thanks :-)

A free hosting service might work. Keep in mind that the opening of a PDF in the browser depends on the browser being used and what software they have installed.

I purposely don't allow my browser to do that since someone can inject malicious code into PDF's and use that as an attack vector.

I use UbuntuOne. You get 5gb free storage, and it does syncing and crap, though I don't do that.

Ansel: the two provided by Fazer and lx are both good services. Do a google search for "file sharing service" There are a ton of them!

BTW, I love the subject line you started this thread with, "OFF TOPIC" Sure got my attention fast!

If I was Ansel looking at which one to get I’d go for https://one.ubuntu.com because of the look and feel, it just jumps out at you and says pick me, pick me. Unlike http://uklinux.net which has had the same boring home page for the last 14 years or so. It has a good service because I’ve used it loads of times in the past, I just don’t understand why they don’t upgrade the website. It might have been OK it the days of the old 486 processors but come on, it’s 2012

Hey Ansel, if you are just looking at someplace to throw a file and have it linked to over the web I should be able to help you out. I won't know until early next week but I am quite sure it won't be a problem unless you're expecting it to get millions of hits. PM me if you are interested.

Thanks all of you, that's very kind!

I will try the few links suggested, failing them i might take you up on your offer Crullers. It's a file i need up by Monday for my Nephew.

                  Thanks again! :-)

An alternative thought. I am pretty sure you can upload a PDF through google documents and then share that with others via email. Not really the same as what you are asking though. Anyway, I use drop box these days mostly because several other people I know use it so it makes my life easier to follow suit. I also use Amazon Cloud.

Worst case I got a server or two of my own. If you were really pressed I could throw it up on 1 and give you the link to provide to others. How long does it need to be hosted?

Thanks mate, well it's uploaded on UbuntuOne now. So i am really pleased :-)

If there are any advantages to uploading to your domain Ken, like it would be quicker to access that would be a good option though it would need to be hosted for a month or two.

Thanks all of you - very kind. Cheers.

Probably no advantages at this stage since you have it uploaded and ready to go, unless there is advertizing in the way of the download but no. Just figured worst case I could get it online in a matter of minutes depending on the size.

Ansel, there are lots of services for this as others have mentioned. If you want though I have a server that is up 24/7 and has an insane internet connection so I could host your PDF on it. You would just email me the PDF and I would load it on there and then give you a link, and literally thousands of poeple a day could view/download it at high speeds without any interruption.

Not sure how to do it without a domain of your own, but they really cheap now (.com's) sell for 2.99 at namecheap and a shared hosting account is $9.99 a month.

There are various .PDF sharing sites though where you don't have to wait and people can read your PDF file right on their site such as slideshare.net, scribd.com etc :-)

I run a couple of sites, i'm not a full time web guy but i like to keep my hand in. Yes you can get cheap domain names, but that's only part of the picture. I'm doing a site at the moment and i've used http://www.webhosting.uk.com/cpanel-hosting.php for the domain name registration, and hosted it on a shared linux hosting server. It has a point and click install of FREE blogs, forums, galleries, and ecommerce tools etc...etc, via a cPanel control panel for £49 per year inc VAT, all in...
