Right now, MSE is a standalone product. When you install it, it disables Windows Defender and takes its place.

On Windows 8, MSE is built into Windows Defender. No separate download needed. Anti-Virus/Spyware/Malware protection is now built into the OS.

Cool! Kind of curious though, since I always assumed Microsoft had some kind of deal with the antivirus companies or something, which is why they always pre-load your OS with a 60 day trial of Norton or something. Maybe they have an angle to it, I refuse to believe they are doing it for free.

Even weirder, Norton for example will regester every keygen as a trojan, but MSE never flags stuff from torrents. Weird huh?

The OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) are the ones that pre-load the OS with stuff like 3rd party anti-virus programs, software trials, and so on.

However, if you buy a computer from the Microsoft Store (in-store or online), you'll notice that it contains no bloatware or trial software. Just the essentials.
