    Oh so true...but very sad

    An excellent Training Aid

    for

    Children and Grand-Children

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be very liberal, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch conservative, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing in school.

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, "How is your friend Audrey doing?"

She replied, "Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She's always invited to all the parties and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung over."

Her wise father asked his daughter, "Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA."

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, "That's a crazy idea, how would that be fair? I've worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work!

Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!" The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, "Welcome to the conservative side of the fence."

If you ever wondered what side of the fence you sit on, this is a great test!

If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one
If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat.
If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.
Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.
A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and Jesus silenced.

If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping forit, or may choose a job that provides it.
A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.

If a conservative reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh.

A liberal will delete it because he's "offended."
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

These are all very one sided arguments that don't hold any basis in reality though. Let's take this for example:
If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping forit, or may choose a job that provides it.
A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.
As though liberal's issue with healthcare is that they don't want to go "shop for it", or that they "choose" to be employed somewhere that doesn't offer health insurance. Their complain (a valid one I believe) is that it is often times too expensive to purchase, hence millions of people are not able to shop for it due to the price barrier. Also, unemployment is through the roof, and less and less employers are offering health insurance. So people don't have a choice where they can just say "I CHOOSE to be employed by a company that will pay for healthcare". It doesn't work that way.

As far as a liberal demanding that everyone else pay for it, that too is not the case. No one is asking for that. They are saying we need to treat it like a public utility since everyone uses it, and pay it upfront in taxes instead of purchasing it as a product. In other countries with way better healthcare systems than ours, this seems to work fine. I pay an extra $2k in taxes, but have no health insurance bill. In contrast, in America I will pay $400+ a month for myself and still have to pay a deductible or a co-pay. So by paying it in taxes there is a net savings.

Also, everyone is already paying for those without healthcare. The cost is just passed on to those who do pay for it. As fa as the whole death panel argument, where people are afraid some bureaucrat will decide if your health is "worth it", that already happens with insurance companies. Got cancer? Your policy is canceled, no insurance for you.

Let's take these one by one and revise them:

If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one
If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.
This one is true, I don't know why the left hates guns so bad, there is no arguing this point really as the left has for decades been trying to restrict guns.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat.
If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.
Liberals aren't mainly vegetarians, and even if they were, they aren't calling for meat to be banned. They do "raise awareness" about meat related items but there is no movement to ban meat that has any real followers.
If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.
This one is bogus too. Conservatives, if down-and-out, sign up for welfare the same as any liberal. In fact the vast majority of welfare recipients are white conservatives living in the south. How ironic.

If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.
Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.
This one is half true. The liberals have been pushing the fairness doctrine for a while now, wanting to ban republican radio or force successful republican shows to have leftist commentators on them too so it's 50/50.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.
A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and Jesus silenced.
This one is real complicated. It's more like if a republican believes in jesus he wants to force jesus on everyone else by making religious laws on things like the sale of alcohol, banning gay marriage, and putting "in god we trust" on our money and "under god" in our pledge (we did this in the 50's and yet modern republicans act like these god references were there from our founding or something, not sure why). Liberals want no religion in government, which I can get behind. It's not the governments place to decide my religion. Conservatives want to use big government to force their wizard fairy tales on you at the state level.

You can always find examples to support your argument. There is a long tradition of conservatives banning things..."objectionable content" in art, various drugs, scientific ideas, lifestyle choices of all sorts, etc. The silliest idea in the world is that conservatives are all for personal freedom and liberals all want to control people's lives. The facts of history do not support that.

As for gun laws... There are certainly those on the left who would like to ban guns altogether. So what. It's one group of people. There's a larger group who wants more restrictive gun laws with licensing and registration requirements, and those are perfectly valid positions. The main fear is that guns laws are a slippery slope, and that it starts with small restrictions that lead eventually to a total ban. Then there's the rest of us who are quite okay with guns. I own four myself. So there. I personally despise all those on both sides who want to control people and look after what's best for the rest of us.

Damn - It's almost impossible to relate to American politics.
It's like it's all twisted and unfair... It's basically based on the classic "You're either with us, or against us" kind of thing.
Back here in Denmark we pay between 41-60% taxes and I'd say we get by pretty damn well... Sure if you want 10 mansions and 100 cars it probably ain't the place to be, but close to everyone here can afford a good home and a good car and still support their families and all education is free.
I'd say that the country supports it weak but it certainly doesn't take a way the chance to make huge wages. So I don't know what y'all are complaining about over there.
