    new world of console gaming

    http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged...003839870.html

The next evolution of home console gaming is shaping up like a dystopian Philip K. Dick short story. Refueled by the latest PlayStation 4 rumor, signs continue to point to a future in which games are no longer really yours to own, instead just a virtual right to play -- just as long as you're connected to the Internet, have a unique ownership ID, and aren't playing a used copy.

Holy CRAP!!! I am getting some very bad feelings on what this is going to evolve to in a everyday working environment as well as entertainment.

But people will keep on taking it; unfortunately, me included. I keep Windows on this box for the sole purpose of playing the Bioshock franchise. If I had more of a spine, I'd only support companies that respected my rights. Oh well. I'll never own a console, and there's plenty of libre games to play if I finally decide to tell all the big devs to go fsck themselves.

I don't even own the current generation of gaming systems. To be honest, I don't have any time to play videogames anymore.

As for the anti-used games policy, it's starting to remind me of iTunes' policy regarding songs. Legally, a consumer is only paying to "rent" the songs. I'll never give them a dime either.

This just seems like a even further intrusion which will as you state, seem perfectly normal to people after awhile.

It makes me nervous that quite possibly in the near future I will have to log-in to use my graphic design software to all the way of starting my car or changing my temps in the house.

This is why online multiplayer has made such a huge comback in newer video games. You have to sign in to their system to play (and therefore only the owner of the game can sign in), so it's DRM + it doesn't allow for used game sales since if someone else buys it they can't play online.

It's genious really, by requiring an internet connection they can enforce DRM without much impact on the user, but at the same time can destroy the used game market and effectively reduce piracy. I am playing Mass Effect 3 right now but I can't do the multiplayer because it isn't an orriginal copy. Oh well, multiplayer sucks anyways.

This is a reason I'm glad none of the last few generations of games have interested me. I'll just keep on playing my SNES, NES and PS1 games, thank you. Let's see them revoke my rights to play my used copy of Gradius.
