Hi Precious - Absinthe is an amazing drink ... it should be strong, but all absinthe drinkers know you should dilute it 1 part to 4 parts water, right?
Seriously, I know my stuff with this drink. 95% of what's on sale is not real original absinthe - 95% of what's on sale is bright green artificially coloured super-strong herbal liqueur with added thujone (the chemical present in wormwood, a major component of absinthe's herbals that has psychoactive properties). If you were downing shots of that then it is not the real experience. And if you drink 350ml of any 80% liquor that is the same as drinking a whole bottle of scotch! You will be ill doing that.
On the other hand - 5% of the absinthe out there is the real deal - hand distilled with fresh aromatic herbs of which wormwood is only one. It is to be sipped on a sunny afternoon outside a café, diluted 4:1 with ice cold water which brings out the louche (when it goes cloudy like Pernod) and amazing herbal smell. It does give a sharpness of mind to you, combined with a warm fuzzy drunkness from the alcohol - that is the drink that the legend of absinthe is based on, not the fake green stuff touted in nightclubs to be drunk as shots or to be set on fire!
It's not that unlike the difference between Camel (US) snus and Götlands yellow løs really. One is sweet, sickly, artificial and makes you feel ill ... and the other is really hard to get hold of
but amazing, subtle and the real deal.
I'd really recommend www.absintheonline.com - they only sell the real thing and are really decent guys as well. L'Italienne by Stefano Rossoni is my absolute favourite. I promise that anything bought from them will not have the same effect if drunk sensibly.
Cheers
