    ATTENTION SNUSDOG: Rescue Your Friends!

Chinese Activists Rescue Hundreds of Dogs From Cooking Pot
Digital Journal ^ Hundreds of dogs being transported in a truck to Chinese restaurants that serve dog meat as culinary delicacy have been rescued. About 200 people mobilized to stop the truck from delivering the dogs.
An animal rights activist intercepted the truck transporting them. China Post reports the activist used his Chinese micro-blog to alert other animal-rights activists.
According to AFP, the activist swerved his car in front of the truck forcing it to stop. Several other people picked up the message and the police were alerted. The dogs, according to China Post, were being transported from the central Chinese province of Henan to restaurants in Jilin province in the northeast. Daily Mail reports the truck, carrying 505 dogs squeezed into 156 small cages, was stopped on Yunnan Province's highway from Fumin to Kunming. The police took the truck to a nearby police station. China Post reports about 200 animal lovers and activists mobilized at the police station around the truck in eastern Beijing and after a standoff that lasted 15 hours, the dogs were set free after an animal protection group purchased them for 115,000 yuan (US$17,600).
Unfortunately, some of the dogs had died before they could be rescued.
According to Daily Mail, an activist said: "They were cramped together. A cage could be stuffed with seven to eight. Our hearts were broken in seeing that." Volunteers offloaded the dogs from the truck and took care of them over night.
An investigation by officials of the Animal Inspection Department found that the transportation was legal. The owner had a license, therefore, the police were unable to act though they suspected the dogs were being transported to dog meat restaurants for slaughter.
AFP, however, reports that activists said many of the dogs still had collars with bells and name tags, suggesting that the dogs had been stolen from their owners. According to Daily Mail, an activist said: "We can't stop them from eating dogs, as we don't have an animal welfare law. We just hope the government could stop dog mongers from doing dog business." An animal protection group finally intervened and offered to purchase the dogs. Daily Mail reports the dog rescue group paid 60,000 yuan for the dogs, but China Post reports 115,000 yuan was paid. According to China Post, the interception of the dogs was yet another of similar incidents in the past. China Post also reports than in recent years animal rights activists have attempted to stop trucks carrying "hundreds or even thousands of cats" to meat markets in southern China, where cat meat is popular.
Consumption of dog and cat meat is believed to help keep the body warm in winter cold and in spite of increasing popularity of pets, the practice of eating dogs and cats remains widespread in China. Reports say, however, that authorities are looking into drafting a law to stop the practice.

For the record only a small(ish) percentage of people in a small(ish) southern province in China (Guangdong) eat cat meat. The Vietnamese do it too, and as posted in another thread here (I think I just called it "Cat Meat") with links, people in rural Switzerland and Peru do as well. If my cats don't start getting along and stop waking up my baby, we might be able to add Seattle to this short list. Just trying dispel the rumor that Chinese eat cats. And dogs for that matter. Only people in the provinces in the Northeast, close to Korea where it's also a longstanding tradition, and in the southern provinces (Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong) eat dogs. I remember asking some dudes in Shanghai if they ate dogs and they were horrified and said "no, that's illegal". The joke in China about people from Guangdong province (near Hong Kong) is that they eat everything with 4 legs but a table and everything that flies but an airplane. It sounds better in Mandarin.

As for dogs.... tastes like mutton.

I eat squirrel as do many people in the us. Can't imagine it's much different. I'd, no I will eat dog and cat if it becomes appropriate and necessary for survival. Anybody who says different is either confused or don't know the power of your survival mechanisms. In a survival scenario you will most likely eat the a#s hole out of skunk...... Just saying...... Oh and I hare parrots taste just like,,,,, wait for it,,,,,,, Armadillo!

I'll eat anything once. My worst experiences have been with blood and brains, but having said that, I didn't puke. Last time I ate beef liver, in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, I went outside and puked bloody murder. Fsck some beef liver, or any liver for that matter. I tried some "country pate" recently, and I've had fois grois, if that's how it's spelled, and it all tastes like what it is: Liver. You can't polish a turd. I will eat dog again before big hunks of beef liver. Give me liver from an animal I haven't tried... and foolishly, I will be game. Beef liver and all the Russians who love it can go to hell though.

Liver is one of my favorite foods. Beef and chicken anyway, haven't tried any others.

Yeah dude after squirrel any mammal seems game. Just a short step away from the neighbor's cat. When I first met my girl she lived way out in the Oregon boonies (well to be fair it was along to mighty Columbia River so not that far out), and her family had this cute Keeshhond, a Dutch dog breed. Well "Keisha" had babies, and they gave them away at the general store.. A few weeks later this dude who lived up in the hills called my girl's mom and said "if you don't come get this puppy back from me I'm fixin' to eat her"........

Not that has to do with you eating squirrels Blue... just came to mind. If I ever come to Illinois we are chasing squirrel with beer. This city boy needs me some squirrel. Which is funny, considering I have a BB gun, a BBQ, and plenty of squirrels all within spitting distance of each other. Shouldn't have just called in that Thai food delivery... could have made a nice squirrel salad.

I hope some others contribute to this thread. I know Blue eats squirrel. Does anyone else? Do people in Sweden eat squirrels?? Talk to us.

You mean like cows and pigs and squirrels and chickens and most fish unless you consider other fish and worms meat. Whatever. I eat what I like which is suprisingly balanced and low in chemicals, It can be done. without paying into the machine. I know, Blue's crazy and eats crazy things and I could never do that. Ahhh! Eff off. Anybody can eat decently well and harvest their grub for little to nothing compared to buying crap at the store. Mind you I harvest protein more than veg but still. I know where at least %50 of m food comes from. Most people cannot say that........

Liver is good. I especially like it in sausage form (known in Iceland as lifur pylsa).

There's a saying here in America: "I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse". Well, I'll just say that I don't need to be hungry. I'm more than willing to eat the horse

Interesting tidbit: From the 1940's through the 1960's, horse meat was sold at Pike Place Market

                            -------------

Steering back to the original topic: I'm willing to try meat from any animal, but I draw the line at dog. To me, they're sentient beings on the same level as humans (especially when you consider that dog has coexisted with us since the dawn of our modern existence). I don't think we would be where we are today without dogs. Both species has mutually benefited from cohabitation.

Also, they're capable of extraordinary things, such as detecting abnormalities in the human body (e.g. cancer and impending seizures).
