I think the point he was making was that putting such material items so high on your priority list, before people and the social connections with them, is what often leads to the behavior of disrespect as people are a lower priority now. And buying things you cannot afford is symptomatic of that sentiment.

Interestingly enough that is exactly what our country did for a period of time. The eugenics movement was strong here in NC and they are just now dealing with reparations to the people they sterilized. Funny thing is how it coincided to the rise of Nazi power in Europe at the same time.
