    Hindenburg Pics

Pretty cool pics of the Hindenburg here...

    http://www.theatlantic.com/infocus/2...saster/100292/

Even knowing how it went down, I'd totally cross the ocean in an exact replica if given the chance. I don't trust lighter than air ships at all, but being able to fly, and open the windows on the trip is too good to pass up. The sheer size of the thing is spectacular, and the appearance is a strange combination of futuristic, and retro all at once. Imagine a sky full of these things instead of airplanes :^)

Here's some interior pics, but they're kind of small :^(

Interestingly most of America's large airships came to a bad end because of the main enemy of such craft--bad weather--and the fact that they used helium for lift instead of hydrogen like the Hindenburg was not a factor. The Germans actually liked using hydrogen in their non-combat airships because it can lift more weight per cu.ft. than helium.

The whole thing looks impractical in every way.
It does look magnificent in the air but because in our minds we associate it with the Nazis it just looks evil.

      Great pics.

Completely awesome pics. Can't see how a giant balloon filled with hydrogen wouldn't explode in a fiery wreck, but I am sure it seemed like a cool idea at the time.

I thought they were filled with "Led". Yea great photos
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Great pictures. The Germans were at the forefront of engineering in the 1930s and 40s. They had successfully engineered V2 rocket flight, and Nazi scientists were recruited after the war to work in the states for their knowledge. I think things would be very different today if hitler hadn't fought the war on so many fronts and actually listened to his generals, thank god he didn't.

Yah they were VERY ahead of us in engineering and science. Their science dept was just decades ahead, and if it wasn't for project paperclip where we brought all their guys over here after defeating them, we wouldn't have gotten the jump we needed to become the sole remaining superpower. That was a close war, and frankly they should have won (logistically speaking). Like you said, thank God Hitler was an idiot and didn't listen to his generals.
