The machines look nifty, but the locked bootloaders are a no-go for me.

I'll buy one just to get real excel on a tablet instead of the crappy versions that only support 20% of the formula functions.

How the hell is it that a modern spreadsheet software program doesn't support "if" statements.

        Hmm...

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3_eEhPNQQM

During the launch of Microsoft's new Surface tablet in Los Angeles on Monday, Windows president Steve Sinofsky, struggles when the device appears to crash. The tablet, running Windows 8, freezes as he tries to demonstrate how the new Internet Explorer allows the user to 'browse smoothly'. Sinofsky swaps the tablet for a working model before continuing the demonstration

If it were me, I'd wait until these devices are released, and see how the user reviews go. On the Surface(:^D) these annihilate the iPad for functionality.

I like the integrated keyboard/cover design they have. I don't think I would want windows on a ablet myself but that's because I don't use a tablet as a replacement for a PC. I think they are trying to target the netbook crowd, those who want to do actual shit like use MS word or Excel, Citrix etc but in a more mobile fashion. It may be successfull for that demographic but the "Hey I got some new cool shiny tech" demographic is probably going to stick with apple or android. My mom has the new iPad and it is a beast as far as it's processing power. A major improvement over previous models. Other than the lack of a true MS Office Suite, I don't see any way to improve on it (aside from unlocking it and letting you instlal linux on it). Then again, doing everything from the terminal may be a bitch on the damn touchscreen.

I have a new iPad and I love the hell out of the format. To me though, a perfect device is this:

Mobile like a tablet when I am working, useful for entertainment purposes when not working and if I could hook up/connect a mouse, keyboard and a monitor to it when I set it on my desk that would be the holy grail of mobile computing for me.

Heck, 95% of my computing could be done on a tablet type device, as long as when I needed it I could hook up a keyboard and mouse for detail work. I currently use an Acer w500 as a my work laptop and my iPad as my trusty mobile device. I have a very nice core i-7 desktop at home that I do a bit more stuff on, but hell, I really don't need a fat desktop for anything.

When they get released, I am actually going to try and pare down to just a windows 8 tablet for a month and see if that suffices.

Thought I would post a follow up to this. I bought a Surface RT, which was pretty good as a little laptop replacement but on the last day returned it an got a Surface Pro with a touch cover. It's probably the best business tablet out there, hands down.

Awesome screen, acceptable battery life (about 5-6 hours for what I use it for).

If you are looking for a hybrid tablet/ultrabook, this is where it's at.

I love my Surface Pro.. Make sure to create a Recovery image with an 8 gig USB 3.0 flash.. You'll gain about 8 gigs on your Surface!

I had the RT version and while I was able to get what I needed to get done on it I figured if I was going to constantly have to compromise, I might as well not have it and use my iPad.

I've not gotten up the courage to leave my iPad at home for a day quite yet but I can say that there are days I haven't pulled it out and instead do more "tablet" things on my Surface.

I still think the size is a bit too big. If they could get a full x86 (and no, not a seriously underpowered Atom) tablet with full Windows8 in a 9 or so inch frame and right at a pound, I'd be in pure heaven.

Agreed. I wish I would have sold my RT while people still wanted them, now everyone just wants the pro. Oh well. Paperweight.
