    Varifocals..

Has anyone had any experience with varifocals?

I mean do you ever get used to them? They're a nightmare to me on day 1 :-o :-)

Went to them from single vision as now being an old git I need help with my reading over the top of my normal prescription.

Yeah, it takes a while to get used to them. I've had a few and seems they can vary a bit. Had one pair that made night driving nearly impossible for a while and the next pair was no problem even though the prescription was nearly identical. Just glad for the improvement in optics. My grandparents had lenses with little circles in the bottom half of the lens and it looked really weird.

They take a long time to get used too, the brain and neck muscles have to get in synch to use them right, and what has happened to me twice, is that the damn things are not set up right. The active part of the lens will be slightly larger than a pea, this has to be kept directly in plane and in front of the pupil. anything short of just right will drive you nuts. I think it took two weeks to get used to them at first, then after that you want to get someone who knows what they are doing to fit them. If my nose pads get tweaked just a tad, I know it right away.

Pris, this is the beginning of a continual spiral of humiliation that begins as you get older and need additional help to see straight. This need will open the door to every quack and shyster and signal that you are now ripe for a fleecing.

The good news is that in a very short amount of time you will be able to spot these shysters from about a mile away. Then you can start to vent your wrath and spittle upon them once you see them for the pathetiC leeches they are! This will become sport and an art!

But dont try this with the pathetic money sucking leeches in the government! They are meaner than they look and have no qualms about making and example out of you. And if you do not learn to control your wrath with the politicians, you will break your radio and tv screens way too often.

That sounds familiar. That's what the optician said I needed to give them.

This also sounds familiar. When I went to collect them a checkout operator/cashier just handed them to me and I said pretty much WTF? they must be the wrong prescription! so I had to wait to see the 'dispensing optician' who drew blobs on the lenses and such and started screwing with the nosepads. I left with them optimistically, rather than happy but they were a lot better than they were to start with. I assume some more adjustment might be necessary in the future though as especially I find I tend to knock the nosepads when cleaning glasses.

The progressives have to be fitted by a knowledgeable optician, this narrows it down to not many of the "new" shops. I do like mine, although it was a rough patch at first, but you will always need to keep them in good fit, and will need to find a good shop. A belated Welcome to that certain age.

Is varifocals has any side effects? I’m just curious with that thing. It’s very new to me, since my eyes are not like before. Thanks in advance, and I’m counting on your reply.

One big problem is you cannot lie in bed and watch TV, you need to keep your head tilted down to much to focus correctly. And the first week you have them you will fail to notice objects such as curbs and cliffs, no hiking that first couple of weeks!

The upside is that looking down through them magnifies everything! So taking a piss is empowering! Just don't glance to the side in a public bathroom, you will mistake everyone for John C Holmes! Nothing more embarrassing than to be standing at the urinal going "jeebzus" all the time!

I'm finding it hard with TV too. I too have to angle my head downwards and/or have my glasses slightly down my nose to watch.

I find things weird on the computer too. Whereas I used to be able to read from left to right without moving my head I find I need to move it now and of course you have to line up your laptop screen and head for the vision to be ok.

One good thing is though when you glance down to read something not that big whereas it used to be a bit of a struggle now it's nice and clear.

I think I will persavere with them.

I haven't eyed up any men in the toilet yet but I don't generally do that kind of thing (not that there's anything wrong with that) ;-)

You will always have to turn your head to use the lenses, that is really what you are training your mind and eyes to do, it does not come natural. No more sharp peripheral vision. The positives outweigh the negatives for me. you will train your self to be able to focus on most any distance naturally real soon.

Yeah, I think it'll work out, just have to stick with it. I can kind of see the benfits will outway the negatives already.

Well I'm just about a week in now and not getting on very well.

Was sitting in a reastaurant the other day and couldn't get distance focus and the near vision wasn't quite right either so that ruined that.

TV is not good unless I angle my neck right down which gives me neck ache so again not good.

Computer a bid of a bind unless I keep moving my head side to side and up and down, not good once again.

Not sure if I will be able to ride these out but as the snooty optician informed me I have to 'stick with them for at least 2 weeks' before they'll consider doing anything for me :-/

I always thought glasses were supposed to make it easier for you to see rather than more diffuclt.

The side to side tells me that you may have a problem with the lenses, They have to be critically located directly in front of the eyes. I have had about a 60% success rate with getting them right from the providers. You might inquire as to whether they are made and fitted properly. These do have to be perfeclty made, the lenses have to be on axis, and the pupils have to be perfectly centered when fitted. I know they are wrong right away now since I have gotten used to them. I always stand my ground with these providers, it is up to them to do it right.
