If telemarketers are bothering you with unwanted calls, you can register with the National DO NOT CALL Registry by taking the following steps:

• Call 888-382-1222
• Enter "1" for English (yes, I know!) and wait for the next message
• Enter "1" again to register and wait for the next message
• Enter your 10-digit phone number and wait for the last message and then they hang up

You must do this on the phone that you wish to register. If you have a cell phone as well as a wired house phone, you need to make two calls - one on each system.


Should you accidentally answer one of these unwanted calls and they start their pitch, press "0" and they must stop and automatically place you one their "DO NOT CALL" list. This is what the helpful person at Verizon Wireless recently suggested to me. Unfortunately, I believe political calls are exempt!

or you can do it easily on the internet. Calls that are excempt from the rules are political, charitible organizations and businesses you have dealt with before. If you get any calls from places that don't qualify for the exemption you can easily report them. I do it everytime, again, it only takes a minute. BASTARDS

Or you can screw with them and pull a reverse prank call.

There's an audio clip somewhere where a comedian pretended to be a detective at a murder scene and grilled the telemarketer as if he were a suspect. Hilarious..

Is this enforceable across borders though? I'm on the do not call list here but still get the occasional telemarketer calls. I have to tell them I'm on the list and not to call again but what good does the registry do if I still get calls? I've heard that they work around it by originating calls outside the country. They could be sitting next door to me but would be easy to do through re-origination (I'm somewhat involved in telecom in my field of work). Might be a different scene in the U.S. not sure.

Alternative method:

When a telemarketer calls you, ask them if they could hold for a second, then set the phone down and walk away from it for a half hour. If they are still there when you pick it back up, ask them to continue to hold... repeat the process until they hang up.

LOL I do that alot. I just put the phone on mute and keep watching tv till they hang up.

Thanks for the heads up! I am on the DNC list already but it appears it's not very effective. Although the number of unsolicited calls did lessen, I still get several calls every day. What should I do?

A friend suggested I report the phone numbers to http://www.callercenter.com, the FTC and the State Attorney General. Is that correct? I want to be sure that I'm doing the right thing.

I feel for the guys that have to do that job. Usually when they call i ask them when their next break is, say im going to put my phone down but not hang up and tell them to do as they wish with the situation at hand. they usually thank me.
