Online gambling: Tribes now look to cash in

"While still wary that online gambling will cut into their casino profits, many tribes now see legalization as inevitable. So they are lobbying Congress for a say in how online gambling might be regulated."

WASHINGTON — Fearing they may get left behind in the rush to expand legalized gambling to the Internet, more U.S. Indian tribes are lining up to back online poker and angling for new ways to cash in.

Consider the Tulalip Tribes in Washington state: Eight months ago, tribal secretary Glen Gobin told Congress that the Tulalips opposed any kind of Internet gambling, regarding it as a threat to their two casinos. But on July 26, he told a Senate panel that tribes now "must have equal footing to participate" and that Congress should consult with them before junking a 2006 ban against online gambling.

"Glen is a realist," said W. Ron Allen, chairman of the Washington Indian Gaming Association, which represents 27 federally recognized tribes.

John Pappas, executive director of the Poker Players Alliance, a lobbying group that represents 1.2 million members across the country, said it's "definitely safe to say that the tribes' position is evolving on a federal solution."

Many tribes still oppose Internet gambling because they worry that gamblers would be less likely to go to casinos if they can stay home and play for money on their computers.

But with many of them now regarding legalization as inevitable, Allen predicted that there will be "less reluctant resistance" as tribes realize that there's little hope of stopping the push for legalization in Congress.

"Inevitably, they're going to pass something," he said. "I think tribes as a general observation would prefer that it not happen, but tribal leaders are being realistic."

I would vote to ban all casinos around the world.

Gambling can be as addictive as tobacco and in some cases they have devastated families right under the nose of the law -

I'm glad you're not king of the world.

Yes, gambling can be addictive to those that are predisposed to it, and they should avoid it. But, not everyone is 'addicted' to gambling. I like to have a good time now and then at the casinos. Sometimes I hit it big, sometimes I don't, but I always have a good time.

Don't take that away from me.

While that last statement is indeed true, the answer isn't to decide how everyone else should live. Addiction is a behavioral issue and sometimes genetic. There should be more services readily available to help solve the issues the addicted people have rather than nanny-ing the responsible adults, which is an issue we are currently facing on many fronts now since "nanny-state" seems to be the wave of the future. I lived in Vegas for 10 years, and while I used to stop by the blackjack tables after work to unwind, I never lost more than I could afford to lose. And when I moved, I stopped. Most people without addiction issues are like that, whereas people with addiction issues will become addicted to anything (i.e. lotto tickets, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, etc.). So removing one addiction doesn't solve the problem, it just forces them to find another addiction.

... or take their addiction underground.

The same can be said for alcohol, cars, firearms and sex. Should we just ban them all?

I'm for legalizing everything that only affects the people involved.

I am thinking we need a Federal Moron Card program. If you feel you cannot handle things like gambling, tobacco or firearms you will have one of these cards and you cannot purchase any of these items. It will be illegal under federal law. The rest of us adults who feel that we can use these things responsibly will not have a card and can continue to use these items.

I know what you're saying is a joke but a better program would be everyone who isnt a moron should get a card stating that. It'd be like checking ID to buy alcohol rather than hoping morons show their ID card

Also Precious you're way of thinking is a bit odd.....I know of people that get high off of pressurized air....should me and 99.9% of the worlds population live with dusty ass keyboards so some people are protected? Some people get fat from eating fast food so should we cripple our economy (even more) take away jobs and put half of city industries out of business so Obamaniqua isnt exposed to what makes her fat? Propane is used to make some kind of drug (pcp or meth or something) Should we make Hank Hill give up his dream job so someone isn't making it? When you start following the "well one person cant handle it lets get rid of it" method we'll end up with everyone living with houses of foam....until we find out someone is allergic to that foam and start putting everyone in plastic bubbles.
