I've joined the ranks of the Dark Side....

Hanging my head in shame now, lol. I once vowed to NEVER purchase an iPhone, but guess what? I am now the proud owner of an iPhone, and so far, I love it.....so far ;-) I am having a little difficulty figuring out how to do some of the things that I used to do with my Android device, but I'm getting it slowly.

I found out that I cannot "send" a contact from my Droid to my iPhone, which sucks. If anyone knows of a way to accomplish this, let me know, because manually imputing ALL of my contacts sucks ass.

I like how this phone seamlessly runs many applications in the background without lag on the operating system. That's something that I had problems with using Android.

So if anyone has ideas, suggestions, input or just plain old ridicule....now is the time ;-)

I used to be a phone support adviser for iOS. here's a fancy tutorial for transferring your contacts easily.

I've used both sides. I worked inside Apple, and read notes from the engineering department. Really, the iPhone and it's software is really stable. Very few *real* problems with the hardware, and the software is highly optimized. Personally, I'm using Windows Phone 7 right now and loving every minute of it.

Good luck. You're now the proud owner of one of the most restricted computing devices ever made. No control over the hardware, and no control over the software. You can never be sure exactly what it's doing, or whether it's helping you, or ratting you out to the government or corporations(are they different anymore?). Sure is pretty though ;^)

What you say is true lx. But really do you think that other makers aren't reporting the same data. Back when I got my first cell I would tell people it was just an electronic leash. Meaning that at anytime and anywhere other people could find me. Flash forward 15 yrs and I'll be damned, I was more of a prophet than a social commentator. At least then I could just not pick up.

You should've waited for the new Windows Phone 8 devices...

Cell phones are inherently tracking devices due to the nature of the technology. Even removing all non-essential software won't nullify that because they still need to triangulate from towers to get a signal to you. With an open/semi-open model you can control how much /other/ information is provided to the companies and government. I don't have a phone of any kind atm, but I've been considering getting an Android. The main feature I'm looking for is hackability so I can choose the software i use, and know what the software is doing. My plan is to leave it in airplane mode until I want to make a call, and then enable enough to do that. What that'll do is give me a computer that'll fit in my pocket, and minimize my exposure to outside parties that want to know more abut me than I want to reveal. That's a compromise that'll give me access to necessities, while minimizing exposure. Not the most convenient setup, but convenience isn't my major priority. Keeping me, and my life out of major databases is my main priority, as it should be with everyone.

I have to agree with everyone here. I personally hate apple. It all started 4 years ago when their support team suggested i spend 3500 on a macbook to "fix" my 150 dollar ipod. You are restricted to itunes for music, and bringing itunes up on your computer is about like trying to download a 3d movie on a dial up connection. I personally have the galaxy s3 and do love it quite a bit. I certainly wouldnt consider myself a fanboy of anything but all i can do is hold in my maniac laughter when some apple fanboy tries to tell me how much more their iphone can do than my phone. Not to mention my sister who of course got "applecare" with her iphone and instead of sprint just fixing her broken one she had to drive 2 hours to her nearest apple store to get it repaired. Lx your wish sounds like maybe you should contact linux about making a phone. That would be badass. Definitely not mocking you in any sense rick. Smartphone are smartphones to a certain extent and they are cool as hell to have.

Quick question, is it just where im at or do people everywhere walk around texting on iphones with a spiderwebbed screen? It baffles me that so many people spend money on a phone and dont pay the extra 100 a year to cover it from damage, especially a phone as fragile as the all glass iphone.

Android is already Linux, but isn't GNU/Linux. It isn't so much a software problem as a hardware problem. Hardware is hard, and companies don't like opening up their designs. There's already Cyanogenmod for some phones, and there's been some experimentation with completely open hardware, but the problem is they've been very small projects, so they take a long time to complete, and are very expensive. You have to be especially dedicated to use an overly expensive, out of date phone. If more people valued their freedom over convenience or price, you'd see more open hardware designs.

I'd pay $1,000 for a phone that let me change software the way I do on my computer, and ensure I knew that the software was doing. Tracking is a serious issue with regards to privacy. It's one thing to know you're at home during the night, and at work during the day. It's another matter entirely to know where you are at every moment with 1m accuracy. That's all available to the government for the asking, no subpoena or warrant needed. It's also available to any company your cell provider wants to sell it to. The NSA is building a huge database with every communication Americans make in it. Aside from being a Constitutional violation, it's none of their fsking business. You can't be free without anonymity, or privacy. You're just another rat stuck in a despotic cage.

Thats kind of what i meant when i said getting a straight linux phone. It'd be sweet to have a phone thats just blank to start out with and i can download a phone call app a texting app and a browser app as well as some games.......my s3 came with like 13 different cloud music apps already installed as well as a bunch of other shit ive never used before.

Both when I had an I phone and now with Android, I sync'd my contacts through google. I use google services for a lot of things though.

And this was sent from my android tablet running cyanogenmod.

It would take a lot for me to even consider a Windows phone after the Windows CE and Pocket PC devices of years past (both PDA and Cell phones). Had em, never again. Now if a Nokia came out with a relevant multi touch device that was Symbian OS then I would think about it. OK I might consider a Nokia Windows phone but only because of Nokia and still not likely.
