    Ripoff internet companies

So I'm increasingly pissed off at ISPs and their prices. In my town, there's a choice of two providers. Time Warner/Road Runner or AT&T. I opted for Time Warner because it's faster. I have their medium package. Cable internet only. 12mbps down and 1 up. When I first got service a little over a year ago with them, it was supposed to be $35. There is no tax on internet service alone (yet). Since then, my bill jumped to about $45, for no reason. No one there could tell me why. Every month it's different. Always somewhere between $40 and $50. I can't really complain about the speeds I'm getting because they're typically better than I'm paying for:

So a couple of days ago I heard AT&T is offering U-Verse here now. Until now it has just been crappy DSL from them. So I contact them and ask: "Is the U-Verse actually fiber or is it just plain DSL." They said it was fiber. But it isn't. At least not here. So they're deliberately lying to people here, telling them they're going to get much faster speeds. They're calling DSL U-Verse fiber and offering the same speeds. MUCH lower speeds than I'm getting with Time Warner and it comes with a 300gb/month cap with massive charges if you go over.

U-Verse is probably fiber to the node (FTTN) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiber_to_the_x. This is just a guess.

If this is the case, their networking is fiber but households connect to the network via traditional co-ax cable. This way ISPs can, and will, throw around the word "fiber" and pretty much mislead people into believing they are going to get lightning fast speeds. Very misleading.

My connection is rated at 50 Mbps, but I pull in 60+ Mbps most of time.

Sorry I'm just pissed it's been going on so long.

BTW I got shitty cheap ATT DSL and they forced me to switch to shitty U-VERSE and told me I'd still pay the same $19/mo for a year or something. We shall see. Those eff's been effin' me plenty. I switched to comcast for 12 months and they went from 15/mo to 70! Hate them all.

Not a problem man. My comment had no relevance to your Northerner thread which I find funny as well. It's just sad to see such a once great enterprise go down the shoot so spectacularly. Kinda like America......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

What bullshit that is. U-Verse being sold as fiber. Look at those speeds. Awful. But that ping is nice lol.

My understanding is that U-Verse uses FTTC/FTTK (fiber to the curb). That is a good deal better then FTTN. That is also why availability is so spotty.

I had DSL but switched out to U-Verse as it was the only way I could drop my land line phone. That alone is saving me about $40 a month. It's working out okay and have no complaints as U-Verse cost the same as DSL with an option to go much faster.

The problem is that broadband in the US is overpriced and underpowered compared to other parts of the world. We are years behind countries like japan and much of western Europe.

Edit: After a bit more research ATT does use FTTN. Sorry about that.

It's the same story up here. We only have a few big players and regional independents who need to use their infrastructure and are at their mercy. I worked for an independent ISP a couple of years ago for awhile. It was a bit of an eye-opener.
