Looking at buying a new laptop

Hey guys I havent been around as much as i'd like to but i've been busy with school and work the past few months.

Anyways I'm looking at getting a new laptop. I already have my current laptop which i primarily use as a desktop (hooked up to a monitor with external keyboard and mouse on a desk.) I've been looking at purchasing an ultra book. Basically the purpose of it will be for on the go programming homework and mostly just portability. Take away the hassle of disconnecting everything on my current laptop to take it places and so on.

I havent been keeping up with the laptop game for awhile and was wondering if there was anything anyone thought would be particularly interesting. A nice thin lightweight laptop would be great to bring to work on sundays when me and my coworkers dont do a thing besides watch the game and wait for calls. Price isnt really a factor I just want the price to be justified. Like I said I'm mainly looking for something I can take on the go more conveniently than my current 17" laptop that I have to disconnect a bunch of things from to do. I've seen some good reviews on the asus zenbooks and some bad ones. And before any hipster jumps in to comment.....no i will not buy a macbook.

I looked into getting a new loptap a few months ago. The best deal I could find was a Dell 13" ultrabook refurbished with the 3 or 4 year full warranty. Its a new model and they are just starting to show up in the Dell outlet. About my only requirement in a loptap is that its small and has a lighted keyboard. But you can load this thing up if you want. I figure with the warranty and all about $1k to $1.2K.

Or LX will probably come in with a suggestion. He wants more in a loptap then a lighted keyboard.

I suppose it all depends upon what you need.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

I'm personally a big Samsung fan but i wont let that fanboyism get in the way if there is a better product at a better price. I guess my problem is i prefer ordering things online and its hard to tell just how thing something is from a picture. I want this thing as thin and lightweight as possible so it can be easily taken in a bag on the go. I'm not sure if they even make ultra books with an i3 but i think i'd like an i5....looks like going to i7 gets quite pricey for something i wouldnt need.

Nah, I don't know anything about laptops. I like cheap, and buy as cheap as possible. I'd find one I liked the looks of, see if there were any issues putting Debian on it, and if it were clear, I'd buy it. I consider laptops disposable. I want something that can get broken/stolen without being a heartbreak. I haven't been following hardware that closely in general. I built my good computer 6 years ago. It does everything I need, so I haven't bothered looking for upgrades. An SSD boot drive would be nice, but I couldn't justify the expense at this time.

I do the purchasing for my employee's and the last 3 laptops were Dell Inspiron 14z Ultrabooks. They love them. Last one I got was for a more tech savy guy. The specs were in i7, 8gb ram, 500gb hd with 32mSATA. He loves it so far. I'm a MAC guy and even I think they're pretty slick...

That Zenbook is pretty sleek. Check out the Dell XPS Ultrabooks too. Looks more like what you're leaning towards. I had a bad experience with Asus so I wouldn't go back...but then again, I've had multiple bad experiences with Dell because it's all we buy.

I think everyones had a bad experience with everyone. I'm smart enough not to buy a laptop just because its super thin and cool looking but wow this zen book is really something.

whatever you buy ....buy refurbished and spend the money on the longest warranty you can buy.

I love the Dell outlet. and the xps 13 ultrabook.....that will be my next loptap.

currently I have an xps studio 1340. works great.

my wife has my old Dell 700m. works great.

the dog has an HP. no problems so far but it needs a slobber proof keyboard

the dog was useing the desktop but we were having trouble with him chasing the mouse. So we bought him the HP.

so far so good.....if I could keep him off the porn sites.

Sometimes when im on the phone with people at work and they seem preoccupied and not giving a shit about getting insurance and they mention they have a dog i'll ask if it has a license......whats sad is theyre usually so busy with whatever else theyre doing they say yes.
