Kava Kava, from the Western Pacific

Hey guys, I've known about this plant (strictly, a pepper) for a few years now. The active ingredients are 'kavalactones'

From wikipedia: Effects of kavalactones include mild sedation, a slight numbing of the gums and mouth, and vivid dreams. Kava has been reported to improve cognitive performance and promote a cheerful mood. Kava has similar effects to benzodiazepine medications, including muscle relaxant, anaesthetic, anticonvulsive and anxiolytic effects....Desmethoxyyangonin, one of the six major kavalactones, is a reversible MAO-B inhibitor (Ki 280 nM) and is able to increase dopamine levels in the nucleus accumbens. This finding might correspond to the slightly euphoric action of kava.
Kavain, in both enantiomeric forms, inhibits the reuptake of noradrenalin at the transporter (NAT), but not of serotonin. An elevated extracellular noradrenalin level in the brain may account for the reported enhancement of attention and focus.

Yes, there is a (disproportionately conveyed AFAIC) risk of liver problems with using this plant. I know the risk, and I accept it. (People in the Pacific have been using it for millennia)

Several years ago - before eBay existed - I ordered some powder capsules from god knows where, and there was no effect whatsoever, a complete waste of money.

But recently - after considerable research - I ordered a strong kava tincture, from eBay, by the brand Gaia Herbs and blimey, this stuff works. I have issues with anxiety generally and with this I get a really calm feeling, and definite mood enhancement. Also, since I have been using it the time it takes me to get to sleep has dramatically shortened. Usually it takes me several hours of tossing and turning.

I don't drink alcohol, it makes me ill, but this stuff satisfies me in a similar way. I gather various tribes use(d) this plant in a similar way to alcohol.

    Just thought I'd share :-)

I used to work with a lot of Micronesians and they would drink it, they had it in bags and made it like tea. It was disgusting, tasted like lake water. Anyway, I never drank enough to get a buzz but they did and it would seriously mess them up. It was hilarious to watch them at parties.

I had a couple tall glasses of it on the Big island in Hawaii a few years ago. Felt weird, but I was already kinda drunk, so it wasn't a good time to assess the effects. How do you use the tincture exactly? Just curious.

Here is what I bought: Gaia Herbs Kava - Pro Strength
You add 10 drops to a small amount of water then stir, it creates a kind of muddy emulsion. Then drink And yes its an acquired taste lol (tastes like ass)

Edit: The other thing I can add, is that unlike most drugs, tolerance does NOT develop to kavalactones. In fact, I heard there is an inverted tolerance, so the more you use it, the more sensitive you are to its effects :-)

Why couldn't you just take a few drops sublingually at a time. It works with crow's kinda tincture's

I tried capsules a couple of years ago (from eBay), and they did next to nothing; almost complete waste of money. But reading you swearing by the effects of this one, I spent another €40 to give it one more chance

I have almost unlimited access to Diazepam (wife is seriously ill and her doctor gave her more than necessary to also give to me when I am on the edge, lol), but Diazepam (Valium) is rather problematic due to addiction etc. So I only take it once a week or so. I also cannot drink for whatever reason.

            So, thanks for the tip.

Works fine as a shot mate, but I hear it can be used sublingually. Just not how I roll...

YVW, and I hope it works for you. I love the stuff, the Gaia tincture is powerful, in a subtler way than Valium, which I have extensive experience of. I'm looking forward to a tincture shortly, my nightcap :-)

i used to drink this stuff all the time. prepared traditionally from ground roots. it does taste pretty bad, but feels quite nice. if you're up to trying it, i'll recommend "kava by rex". i found them to be a great vendor.

Yeah my puppy hasn't had any coca for a while, Crow. He did enjoy it at the time. Talking about tolerance, he told me you develop it QUICKLY with coca, he prefers coffee

Edit: Plus he finds kava more therapeutic for his needs :-)
